The world of Harry Potter is in mourning as actor Michael Gambon, who famously portrayed the wise and powerful wizard, Albus Dumbledore, has passed away at the age of 82.
According to information released by the actor’s family on Thursday, September 28, 2023, he passed away following a fight with pneumonia.
CNN reports that the actor’s publicist, Clair Dobbs, said in a statement that the actor died peacefully in the hospital while surrounded by family.
In the statement, Gabon’s family asked for discretion while they grieve.
The statement read:
“We are devastated to announce the loss of Sir Michael Gambon. Beloved husband and father, Michael died peacefully in hospital with his wife Anne and son Fergus at his bedside, following a bout of pneumonia. Michael was 82. We ask that you respect our privacy at this painful time and thank you for your messages of support and love.”
Gambon was also an accomplished stage actor and made significant contributions to British theatre and film throughout his lengthy career.
Throughout his four-decade career, Gambon played a variety of parts, but Professor Albus Dumbledore became his most well-known character.
Following the passing of Richard Harris in 2002, who performed that part in the first two Harry Potter films, he assumed it for six of the eight films.
In addition to his many honors, he also won four BAFTAs and garnered two Emmy nominations.
In 2012, Gambon was also given the Richard Harris Award by the British Independent Film Awards, which honors an actor for their exceptional career achievements to British cinema.
He also received a knighthood in 1998 from Queen Elizabeth.
