Nigerian journalist Wisdom Nwedene has revealed the possible consequences that actor Yul Edochie might face if he decides to retrieve the bride price paid for his first wife, May Edochie.
Yul Edochie, a popular Nollywood actor, has been in the public eye due to his ongoing marital dispute with May Edochie.
The actor has expressed dissatisfaction with May’s refusal to return his bride price despite their impending divorce, as well as her reluctance to drop his last name.
According to Wisdom Nwedene, who hails from Ebonyi State, the traditional customs in the region hold that a man loses custody of his children once he retrieves the bride price paid for his wife.
The journalist goes on to explain that if Yul Edochie decides not to proceed with the marriage without reclaiming the bride price, the children will remain legally his.
Nwedene cautions Yul Edochie, advising him to tread carefully if he desires to maintain a relationship with his three children from his marriage with May.
He emphasizes that in Ebonyi State, the act of returning the bride price signifies the transfer of child custody to the wife and her future spouse.
The journalist explains that for Yul Edochie to retain custody of his children, he must take an alternative route.
If he chooses to end the marriage without reclaiming the bride price, the children will continue to be legally his.
However, should he opt to retrieve the bride price, the children will no longer be considered his own, and any future husband of May Edochie would assume paternal responsibilities.
