Veteran Nollywood actor Kanayo O. Kanayo defends Air Peace’s decision to embrace Igbo traditional attire, specifically the Isi Agu, as its cabin crew uniform for London-bound flights.
The airline made this bold move during its inaugural direct flight from Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, to Gatwick Airport, London, on March 30.
The adoption of Isi Agu has sparked a range of reactions, with some Nigerians expressing concern that it reflects a lack of patriotism.
However, Kanayo in reaction , firmly stands by the airline’s choice, emphasizing the significance of preserving Igbo cultural identity.
In a video message shared on his Instagram page, Kanayo addressed the criticism saying:
“I just watched a video of Barr. Allen Onyema, the CEO of Air Peace, explaining why Isi Agu was chosen as the cabin crew uniform for the London route. Some questioned, ‘Why Isi Agu?’ But I ask, why not Isi Agu? Would a buba and iro or agbada have been more acceptable? Whenever something positive happens for the Igbo, hate speech emerges. We must put an end to this divisive mindset. Isi Agu is Air Peace’s chosen identity, and it deserves respect.”
Kanayo also praised Allen Onyema and his brother, Prof. Obiora Okonkwo, for their significant contributions to the airline industry, surpassing what the Nigerian nation has achieved.
“Allen Onyema and his brother, Prof. Obiora Okonkwo, have done more for the airline industry than the Nigerian nation has done. They should be commended, not vilified” he added.
In another story, Kanayo O Kanayo visits Pete Edochie’s Enugu home, shares fun moments with him and son Linc Edochie.
In a freshly posted video on his Instagram page, Kanayo O Kanayo could be seen striding through Pete Edochie’s home, a smile lighting up his face as he approached his esteemed colleague. Pete’s eyes sparkled with excitement at the sight of Kanayo.
With a nod to their Igbo heritage, the two men exchanged a series of backhand claps, a traditional gesture of respect and kinship, before sealing it with a firm handshake.
In the mix of it all, Linc Edochie, actor and one of Pete’s sons, made his presence felt as he approached Kanayo with a respectful bow, extended a heartfelt greeting and warm welcome to the veteran actor.
