I feel honoured – Tems relives Ugandan prison ordeal
  • Tems has relived her Ugandan prison experience.
  • The Nigerian singer and songwriter in 2020 was arrested with her colleague, Omah Lay and detained in prison.
  • Tems in a recent interview spoke about the upside of her unpleasant experience.

Grammy-winning Nigerian singer, Temilade Openiyi, popularly known as Tems, has described her ordeal in Ugandan prison as a blessing in disguise, while speaking on the upside of the situation.

According to the ‘Crazy Things’ crooner, she felt honoured to have experienced prison.

Tems explained that she wouldn’t have known what prisoners were going through if she hadn’t had the experience herself.

She emphasised that her prison experience humbled her. Tems told ES Magazine:

“Prison was once in a lifetime experience that I actually feel honoured to have had because otherwise, I would never have thought about these people, and to be in their presence was very humbling.”

WITHIN NIGERIA recalls that Tems and Omah Lay were arrested and charged to court and subsequently detained in prison in Uganda for making an appearance at a concert held in the country at Speke Resort, Kampala, on December 12, 2020, despite COVID-19 social distancing regulations.

They were eventually granted bail after two nights in jail.

In January, Stanley Omah Didia aka Omah Lay also recounted his bittersweet experience at the Uganda.

The singer said things got really ugly at the time as they wanted to cut his hair amongst other things but the good aspect of it was that it created a bond between him and Tems whom he was arrested with him.

Speaking in an interview with The Beat FM, London, United Kingdom, Omah Lay said looking back at the incident, it was an “amazing time” for him though “it looked rough” then.

According to him, his ordeal in Uganda had to happen for him to move to the next level musically.
