‘Very soon, they’ll say afrobeats is dead’ – Skales
  • Skales stated that in his own logic, everything in life has time and season, so does music genres
  • He stated that one can’t necessarily say something is dead,  just not its time anymore.

Nigerian artist Skales has shared his thoughts on Wizkid’s recent statement that “hip-hop is dead,” offering a different perspective on the ever-changing music landscape.

In a recent interview with Hip TV, Skales emphasized that opinions are subjective, and Wizkid’s comment reflects his individual viewpoint.

He believes that everything in life has its season, and genres are no exception.

He noted that what’s popular today may not be tomorrow, and new styles will always emerge.

Skales cautioned against declaring a genre “dead,” instead suggesting that its time in the spotlight may have simply passed.

According to him, the excitement and popularity of a genre can shift rapidly, and what’s currently thriving may eventually give way to something new.

Skales stated that even Afrobeats, currently riding a wave of success, will one day be said to be “dead”, not because it’s lost its value, but because the musical landscape is constantly evolving.

In his words:

“Everybody has their opinion. Wizkid has his own opinion so that [‘hip-hop is dead’] is his opinion. But for me, my own logic for life is that everything has time and season.

“Everything is going to come and go, and there is going to be another recycle, which means, if you are hot today, you might not be hot tomorrow. Today, if it’s rap that everybody is feeling, tomorrow it will be Afrobeats, and next tomorrow it will be Amapiano, and so on.

“So I won’t say hip-hop is dead. You can’t say something is dead; it’s just not its time anymore. The excitement has moved somewhere else. I’m sure very soon, they will say Afrobeats is dead. It’s just timing. Nothing is meant to last forever. That’s why we all die one day.”
