Nigerian singer CKay has addressed the evolution of Afrobeats, highlighting his pioneering role in shaping the genre.

CKay claimed that he was initially  mocked by colleagues when introducing his unique sound.

He noted that many of these same colleagues are now adopting similar styles, referencing the trend he started on TikTok.

The singer highlighted his contributions to Afrobeats, stating that he paved the way for various vibes that artists now thrive on.

He acknowledged that while some may have mocked his approach, many are now following suit, even profiting from it.

On his X handle, the singer wrote:

“history can’t be rewritten just because some people got paid to rewrite it…i’ll always be here to remind you.

“CKay is the first. I pioneered many vibes Afrobeats artistes thrive off today…iykyk. Y’all laughed when I came up with emo-afrobeat and was on TikTok all day but many are now doing the same thing, calling it ridiculous names (& making $$). you’re welcome sha.”

In another news, CKay launches own record label ‘Boyfriend Music’.

The 29-year-old songwriter launched the new label which he co-founded with his childhood friend and manager, Joseph Salubi.

In a statement, the management said the music company is dedicated to “helping artistes, songwriters, and producers collect their rightful royalties”.

It added that the label will also provide A&R services for artistes “to unlock their creative potential”. The statement reads:

“Boyfriend Music Ltd. is excited to announce its official launch in Lagos, Nigeria. Boyfriend Music Ltd is a music management & publishing company dedicated to helping artists, songwriters and producers collect their rightful royalties and providing A&R services to unlock their creative potential.”

Joseph Salubi, Managing Director of Boyfriend Music Itd added:

“At Boyfriend Music Itd., we believe in empowering creators by ensuring they receive the royalties they deserve and by offering the resources and guidance needed to thrive creatively.”
