“I want to protect my children” – Chimamanda Adichie says as she opens up on welcoming twins

• She noted how many didn’t know she got married in 2019, stating that Nigerians are nosy about her personal life, hence making her a bit resistant to talk about her family.

Acclaimed Nigerian author and activist Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie has shared her thoughts on motherhood and the importance of maintaining her family’s privacy.

In a recent interview with The Guardian, Chimamanda Adichie revealed that she has welcomed twins with her husband, Ivara Esege.

She expressed her desire to protect her children’s identities and keep their personal lives out of the public eye.

She noted that her decision to keep her family life private is partly due to the intense scrutiny she faces from the public, particularly in Nigeria.

The author acknowledged that many people were unaware of her marriage in 2019, and she attributes this to her intentional efforts to keep her personal life private.

She said:

“You’ve met my babies. I want to protect my children. I’m OK with having them mentioned, but I don’t want the piece to become about them. “So, here’s the thing, Nigerians are ” Nosy? They want to know about your personal life. Because of that, I am resistant. I very rarely talk about it.”

Adichie was bestowed the title of Odeluwa, the writer of global acclaim, in her hometown of Aba on Friday, December 30, 2022.

The 45-year-old author was honoured just weeks after urging youths around the world to devote more time to reading during her speech at The Harvard Centre Honors in Massachusetts, US.

She said;

“The most meaningful thing for me as a writer is to know that I can create something that means something to other people. And so what moves me the most is to hear from people who have read me and who say, your work made me feel seen, your work made me think differently, your work made me feel that I was not alone.

And I’m so grateful for this award because again it just makes me feel that what I’m doing matters and it’s a gift to feel what you’re doing matters…”
