Popular media personality and social justice advocate Scott Iguma has been remanded in prison following his bold allegations against Nigerian real estate firm, PWAN. The news has sparked outrage across social media, with many questioning whether justice is being served.
On Thursday, the Lagos State High Court sitting in Ikoyi ordered Iguma’s remand until Monday, following his arrest and detention at Panti Police Station the day before. This comes after he publicly accused PWAN of defrauding customers by selling “receipts instead of land.”
In a series of viral Instagram posts made earlier in the week, Iguma claimed that he had personally submitted 130 petitions to the EFCC on behalf of alleged victims of PWAN’s real estate dealings. According to him, more victims were still reaching out, and 30 additional cases had yet to be officially filed. He alleged:
“PWAN sells receipts for customers instead of land… Day after day, more victims are still coming to my DM and telling me the atrocities they have gone through.”
But what truly ignited public concern was a video posted on Instagram by Nigerian singer Kokopee, who was present at the court premises in Ikoyi. Kokopee said:
“Scott has been remanded till Monday.
“He has been remanded for fighting for people. You have a problem with the way he’s done it? Did he kill someone? Did he commit a crime?”
“In Lagos, I thought they said defamation is not a crime?”
The video quickly went viral, with many rallying behind Iguma, describing him as someone using his platform to expose alleged corporate fraud in the real estate sector. Others, however, cautioned that defamation laws in Nigeria, though evolving, can still be wielded against whistleblowers in controversial ways.
Iguma had also previously alleged that PWAN’s founder was using top police officers to intimidate and silence victims, a claim that now appears to have taken a chilling turn with his sudden incarceration.
