Veteran actress Opeyemi Aiyeola has opened a deeply personal chapter from her life, that many found shocking.
In a recent sit-down on Oyinmomo TV, the Nollywood star revealed that she deliberately cut off all her colleagues in the film industry and disappeared from the public eye for over a decade. All in a bid to protect her marriage. Opeyemi Aiyeola said:
“I was off the scene for more than ten years, and I apologised to my fans. I held my marriage in high esteem, so I blocked everybody’s contact in the industry.”
According to Opeyemi, who relocated abroad after tying the knot with her husband, Olayiwola Abdulwakilu, the decision wasn’t made out of pride or pressure. She revealed that her reason was borne out of a deep desire to protect her home from the instability often associated with celebrity marriages. The actress explained:
“Let’s appreciate our lovers because they caused it. Some of them will say practitioners don’t have stable homes or lives, but they don’t know what happens behind those relationships. So, because I didn’t want mine to be like that, I blocked everyone from the industry for 10 years.”
Now a proud mother of two boys, the actress says she’s back with a renewed focus and a clear sense of purpose. She added:
“I unblocked everybody when I finally returned to focus on my career. I have two boys, and I have sacrificed everything for them. They should now allow me to also carve my own career.”
Her return to Nollywood in recent years has been met with warm welcome and admiration, especially now that fans understand the backstory behind her long absence.
In 2022, Opeyemi revealed the challenges she faced in her marriage and how she was able to overcome them. She shared a picture of her family while admitting that there were moments of “disagreement and huge fights” that almost threatened her marriage. She, however, stated that despite the imperfections, she and her husband have been able to stick together.
