Nigerian music executive and talent manager, Ubi Franklin, has sparked fresh conversations in the entertainment industry after revealing that he includes a ‘No Pregnancy’ clause in contracts for his female signees.
Speaking on the Culture Sonic Podcast, the Made Men Music Group (Triple MG) boss shared his perspective on why he believes pregnancy can be a career disruptor for female artistes, especially those still trying to break into the industry.
According to Ubi Franklin, the music business is already challenging for women, and getting pregnant at the early stages of their careers can make it even harder for them to find their footing. He explained:
“So just imagine that you’re investing in a female artiste and she gets pregnant, that is over because it would take a lot for her to come back. Mention new female artistes that got pregnant and came back.”
He clarified that his stance is not to discourage women from having children but to encourage them to focus on building a strong foundation in their careers first. He added:
“I’m not saying they can’t have children, but first build a strong career. If I am signing a female artiste, I always put it in the contract that they will not get pregnant for the duration of the contract.”
