Former BBNaija star and singer, Uriel Oputa, has come to the defense of media personality Toke Makinwa after writer Solomon Buchi criticized Toke for celebrating her pregnancy outside of marriage.
In a strongly worded Instagram post, Uriel addressed Buchi’s remarks, saying not every situation requires a man to “set up a ring light and start talking.” She wrote:
“First of all, you said the only rightful way to have a child is through marriage. She is not married, yet she conceived and however she conceived is her business. Do you realize there are countless things that could have gone wrong in order for her to carry a pregnancy naturally?”
Uriel, who has a nursing background, highlighted the struggles many women face in their motherhood journey, pointing out that IVF, surrogacy, and even natural conception often come with painful setbacks. She continued:
“Women fail IVF after 10, 15, even 20 attempts. Surrogacy sometimes doesn’t work. Miscarriages happen. Many women inside marriage are still unable to conceive. Yet this woman did. If she chooses to glorify God and say, ‘Thank you, Jesus,’ that’s her right because only she knows the battles she has fought privately.”
Uriel Oputa further questioned why a man should feel entitled to comment on women’s bodies and struggles, urging Buchi to sit out conversations he doesn’t fully understand. She added:
“And lastly, why is a man so loud about issues that directly concern women’s bodies and struggles? Do you even understand the trials and tribulations women go through? If not, respectfully, sit this one out.”
In her caption, Uriel congratulated Toke on her pregnancy while stressing that nobody has the right to dictate how a woman lives her life:
“Coming from a nursing background, I have seen so many women struggle to have children. Women who have gone through IVF multiple times without success. Women who have tried surrogacy and faced disappointment. Women inside marriages who are still waiting, praying, hoping for a child. So when I see a man sit comfortably in front of a ring light to be judgmental… it is beyond upsetting.”
She also quoted Bible verses on judgment, reminding critics that only God has the final say. See screenshot of her post below:
