Award-winning Nigerian singer Adekunle Gold has taken fans down memory lane, reflecting on the album that he says transformed his life and career “Afro Pop Vol. 1”.
In a heartfelt post on Instagram, the music star described the 2020 project as his “leap of faith,” explaining that it marked the moment he chose to break free from industry limitations. He wrote:
“This album was my leap of faith. Five years ago, I chose freedom because I knew I was bigger than the labels around me. That decision changed everything. Fear became courage, and doors I never imagined started to open.”
Released in August 2020, Afro Pop Vol. 1 was Adekunle Gold’s third studio album and a major turning point in his sound and brand. Moving away from the alternative-folk style that first brought him fame, the project saw him fully embrace Afropop, experimenting with new sounds and collaborations that showcased his versatility.
The singer, who now commands global recognition and a loyal fan base, expressed gratitude for the risks he took at the time and for everyone who welcomed his new direction. He added:
“I’m forever grateful for what this album did for me and for everyone who embraced it. Nothing has been the same since then.”
Since the release of Afro Pop Vol. 1, Adekunle Gold has continued to evolve, touring internationally, earning chart success, and pushing the boundaries of Afrobeats on the world stage.

The singer argued that This Year has enjoyed unmatched cultural relevance and viral longevity, claiming that both gospel and Afrobeats acts have borrowed heavily from the song’s unique sound and celebratory template for more than a decade.
