The singer became the subject of public discourse on social media recently following the noticeable absence of Olaoye from Ayomikun’s wedding
Sensational Nigerian gospel singer Tope Alabi has opened up about the circumstances surrounding the relationship with the father of her first child and why she left him.
Tope Alabi’s first child, Ayomikun, was from her alleged first marriage with Lekan Olaoye before the duo parted ways years ago.
After she left Olaoye, Tope Alabi married Soji Alabi in November 2000, and the duo have two children.
The singer became the subject of public discourse on social media recently following the noticeable absence of Olaoye from Ayomikun’s wedding.
She was criticised for not inviting Olaoye to their daughter’s wedding. She was also excoriated for changing Ayomikun’s surname to that of her current husband.
Reacting to the public uproar, the renowned artiste said she was never legally married to Olaoye, adding that they only cohabited while she was hoping he would go meet her parents to ask for her hand in marriage.
Speaking about in a recent video shared on her Facebook page, the gospel singer disclosed that her ex did not do the right thing that was expected of a man who wanted to marry a lady.
He stated Olaoye never brought his family to her father, let alone perform the traditional rite for marriage, adding that he stayed with him because he felt he provided some sort of refuge to escape the mounting pressure to marry by her family but unbeknownst to her she “moved from the frying pan to the fire”
According to the singer, her father expressed worry over her relationship with her ex as he had not met him or any of his family members. She stated that when her partner finally came to see her father he came with his work colleagues and not his relatives.
She said: “He couldn’t tell me not to live with the man. [He’d say] that he hadn’t met the man I was living with nor any of his family members. It took repeated insistence before my so-called partner finally came one night, bringing along work friends. My family asked when his family would come for the introduction, and all he said was, ‘Okay’.”
She said her family did not meet Olaoye’s family till they separated. She added that she had put the episode behind her and no longer needed him to do right by her, as her father, who craved his seriousness and intentionality towards her, had since passed away.
“If that ‘okay’ was ever going to come to pass, perhaps it would have been tomorrow. But tomorrow never came. Now, I don’t even need his ‘okay’ anymore. My dear father, who once longed for it, is no longer here. While here, he received a far better ‘okay’ from a good family. “Ladies, please listen to me, when a man sees that you are gullible or vulnerable, he can take advantage of you”.
