The rescheduled inauguration of the Ogun State House of Assembly’s tenth legislature will take place today (Tuesday) amid growing tension and uncertainty.

The inauguration, scheduled for Tuesday, June 13, was abruptly postponed due to a lack of agreement on the candidate appointed by Governor Dapo Abiodun as the next speaker.

Abiodun supported the re-election of the immediate past speaker, Olakunle Oluomo, as the leader of the tenth legislature.

Oluomo, who is currently in court for allegedly diverting N2.5 billion from the assembly, is being challenged for the seat by Oludaisi Elemide, the former deputy speaker.

Although the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has a 17-seat majority over the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)’s nine members-elect, APC members-elect are opposed to Oluomo’s return as speaker, according to sources.

According to ruling party sources, the inauguration was postponed to allow the governor to appeal to disgruntled APC members-elect.

According to reports, the governor met with the members-elect and insisted on Oluomo as the next speaker.

However, it was unclear whether the APC members-elect would vote for Oluomo in today’s inauguration.

However, PDP members-elect have stated that they are unconcerned about who becomes Speaker of the House.

They also warned against turning Ogun into Nasarawa State, which experienced a leadership crisis last week.

A member-elect, Olalekan Adeleye (PDP- Odogbolu), said the postponement was not the best way to start the present legislature.
