  • Leaders of APC and NNPP receive a call for peace ahead of the Supreme Court judgment on Kano governorship election
  • The Coalition of Civil Society Organizations urges stability amid heightened political tensions in Kano State

As the Supreme Court prepares to deliver its judgment on the Kano State governorship election, leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) have received a call to uphold peace both before and after the court’s decision.

Following the recent decision by the Court of Appeal, which removed Abba Kabir Yusuf of the NNPP as the governor and declared Nasir Gawuna of the APC as the winner of the March 18 governorship election, tensions have risen, leading to protests among supporters of both parties.

In a press briefing on Thursday in Abuja, Otunba Eniola Enaife, the National Secretary of the Coalition of Civil Society Organisations for Democracy, emphasized the need for peace. Enaife noted that their monitoring efforts extended to leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the Labour Party (LP) to ensure stability in the state.

“As a coalition, we are working voluntarily with other prominent CSOs both in Kano State and around the country to gather intelligence around the key leaders of NNPP, APC, PDP, and LP in Kano State in the interest of peace and tranquillity in the state and Nigeria,” he stated.

The call for peace comes amid heightened political tensions and uncertainty surrounding the impending Supreme Court verdict. The coalition’s proactive efforts aim to mitigate potential unrest and encourage a peaceful resolution, emphasizing the significance of stability for the well-being of both the state and the nation.

PDP dissociates self from coalition, merger talks

The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has clarified that it is not engaged in any coalition or merger discussions with other opposition parties.

According to Hon. Debo Ologunagba, the National Publicity Secretary of the PDP, in a telephone conversation with Vanguard on Thursday, the party emphasized its stance.

When questioned about the PDP’s involvement in talks regarding forming a coalition or merger with other opposition parties, Ologunagba highlighted, “The PDP stands as the most organized and democratic party in Nigeria to this day.”

“Most other parties originated from the PDP. We did not and have not entered into any negotiations, nor have we had any talks for a coalition or merger, so-called, with any political party.
