  • Austin Umahi officially announces his ambition to contest the Ebonyi South Senatorial District by-election, emphasizing good representation and transparency
  • Umahi, a member of APC, expresses commitment to making a positive impact and calls for prayers for the success of elections

Austin Umahi, the younger brother of Senator David Umahi, who recently resigned from the Senate to assume a ministerial position, has officially announced his ambition to contest the upcoming by-election in Ebonyi South Senatorial District. The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has scheduled the by-election for February 3, 2024, following vacancies created by the resignation or demise of members of the national and state houses of assemblies.

Senator David Umahi, now serving as the Minister of Works, previously held the Ebonyi South Senatorial seat after winning the February 2023 election. His appointment to a ministerial position necessitated the declaration of his seat as vacant by Senate President Godswill Akpabio, triggering the by-election.

Addressing a press conference in Abakaliki, the capital of Ebonyi, on Monday, Austin Umahi, a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), expressed his commitment to providing constituents of Ebonyi South with “good representation.” He emphasized that his candidacy was driven by the desire to make a positive impact and bring about a transparent electoral process in the district.

Umahi stated, “I am not contesting for personal gains but for the people as it is the time to make a positive mark. I intend to change the narrative, and the district should be given an opportunity to elect a representative in a transparent manner.” He called on his supporters to pray for the success of both the primary and re-run elections, expressing confidence in delivering effective representation based on his experiences in both the business and political sectors.
