In the aftermath of the Supreme Court’s confirmation of Abba Kabir Yusuf as Kano State governor, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, the NNPP presidential candidate, refuted claims of striking an agreement with President Bola Tinubu regarding the judgment.

Addressing allegations of pre-judgment negotiations, Kwankwaso clarified during a conversation with BBC Hausa, stating, “I have not reached an agreement with anybody, including President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.”

Reflecting on their shared political history, Kwankwaso highlighted their parallel entry into politics, emphasizing their collaborative efforts in the formation of the APC. Despite the challenges faced, he asserted, “the judges have done what is right” in upholding the NNPP victory.

Emphasizing his commitment to constructive engagement, Kwankwaso mentioned, “On the issue of joining the government, only time can tell.” He affirmed that advising Governor Kabir Yusuf was his role, not dictating, acknowledging the governor’s autonomy.

He clarified, “Even if he were a biological son, I can’t rule over him. I have given him pieces of advice even before the government came in. There are thousands of people like me. I can’t do it alone.” Kwankwaso urged allowing elected officials the chance to prove their competence.

In reflecting on the judiciary’s role, he acknowledged errors in previous judgments but praised the Supreme Court for rectifying them. He remarked, “If it were in other climes, those who delivered the judgments in the lower courts would quit their jobs.”

This post-verdict discourse highlights Kwankwaso’s dedication to transparency and the democratic process, dispelling rumors of backdoor agreements and emphasizing the importance of allowing elected officials the space to govern and prove their capabilities.
