  • Rivers State Police Command urges politicians to resolve disputes lawfully, discouraging rhetoric that could incite violence
  • The command, led by Police Commissioner Tunji Disu, emphasizes adherence to laws and prioritizing peace amid escalating political tensions

Politicians in Rivers State have been urged by the Rivers State Police Command to resolve their disputes through lawful channels rather than resorting to inflammatory rhetoric that could incite violence.

This warning follows recent verbal clashes between Governor Similanayi Fubara and Nyesom Wike, his predecessor and current Minister of Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

The escalating feud between the two has divided political stakeholders in Rivers State.

While Police Commissioner Tunji Disu did not directly name Wike and Fubara, Police Public Relations Officer SP Grace Iringe Koko relayed his message, emphasizing that the command will not tolerate any actions or statements from politicians that could jeopardize the peace in the state.

The command urged both the political elite and the general public to prioritize peace and adhere to the laws of the land.

“The Rivers State Police Command is acutely aware of the escalating political tensions within the state. In light of these developments, we wish to notify the people of Rivers State of the following:

“The Nigeria Police Force is constitutionally mandated to uphold laws, maintain order, and safeguard lives and property.

“As an integral component of the Nigeria Police Force, the Rivers State Police Command is unequivocally committed to enforcing all laws and orders within the state.

“We will not idly stand by while any individual or group threatens the peace in the state.

“The Rivers State Police Command will take swift action against anyone or any group that violates state laws. We urge the public to uphold peace and respect the law. To those embroiled in political discord, we encourage you to seek peaceful and lawful resolutions to your grievances,” stated Koko.

Koko affirmed that the command will maintain impartiality and refrain from involvement in the state’s current political climate.
