  • Moro clarifies Damagum’s retention as PDP’s Acting National Chairman, stressing it’s not a victory for Wike or Atiku
  • He emphasizes collective decision-making in upholding Damagum’s position, urging focus on PDP’s interests over individual dynamics

Senate Minority Leader Abba Moro clarified that Ambassador Umar Lliya Damagum’s retention as Acting National Chairman of the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) does not signify a victory for Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, or former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.

During the recent National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting of the PDP in Abuja, Damagum was upheld as the acting national chairman until August, despite pressure from members of the House of Representatives and other Atiku loyalists.

Moro emphasized that Damagum’s continuation was a collective decision by relevant PDP stakeholders to ensure the party’s progression.

He cautioned against linking the party’s internal dynamics to individuals like Wike and Atiku, emphasizing that the focus should solely be on the PDP’s interests.

“The party’s constitution outlines a clear succession plan,” Moro explained, citing Section 35 (3C), which dictates that NEC should appoint a successor from the immediate past occupier’s zone to complete the vacated tenure.

Regarding the position of the National Chairman, Moro highlighted plans to follow the party’s succession protocol outlined in the constitution, particularly in replacing Senator Iyorchia Ayu from the North Central region.

“We will approach the next NEC meeting with an open mindset, adhering to the constitution’s provisions to nominate his successor,” Moro affirmed, emphasizing the party’s commitment to upholding its internal processes.
