  • Okpebholo defeated Asue Ighodalo of the PDP in the September 21 governorship election. Ighodalo was Obaseki’s preferred candidate.
  • On Friday, Obaseki dissolved his cabinet ahead of the inauguration.

The Edo state governor, Godwin Obaseki, has said that the All Progressives Congress (APC) is planning Monday Okpebholo’s inauguration without involving the state government.

Obaseki expressed this concern while swearing in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) caretaker committee on Friday.

“The APC hasn’t extended an invitation to me,” Obaseki said, describing their actions as lawless.

“Somebody has to be sworn in. Sworn into a government that exists. You just don’t come from nowhere and start a government,” he said.

Obaseki emphasized the importance of following established procedures.

“The government of Edo state is inaugurating a new governor on Tuesday, but they’re doing it without our involvement.”

He questioned the country’s adherence to laws and precedents.

“Are we okay as a country?”

Obaseki will hand over to Okpebholo on November 12, 2024.

Okpebholo won the September 21 governorship election against Asue Ighodalo, Obaseki’s preferred candidate.

On Friday, Obaseki dissolved his cabinet ahead of the inauguration.

He thanked his team for their dedication.

“No words can adequately express my gratitude…” Obaseki wrote on X.

Previously, Obaseki claimed the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) plans to arrest him after the handover.
