Benefits of Sleeping Well Before an Exam

One of the most common practices by students of all levels is not sleeping the night previous to an exam. They believe that spending the entire night studying for an exam will result in higher grades. Nothing could be further from the truth. Having proper rest the night before an exam has more benefits than studying nonstop.

There have been some scientific studies that back the previous claim. In one of those studies, researchers registered the sleeping time of 535 high school students. Then, they evaluated the capacity of each student to understand the topics taught in class. Researchers also assessed each student’s performance on a test and homework.

What researchers found contradicted their expectations. Students that slept more time outperformed those that used some sleeping time to study. The study concluded that sacrificing sleep time to study for a test doesn’t bring better results. On the contrary, not having enough sleep may lead to poorer academic performance.

But what about homework? Many students would like to go to sleep earlier, but homework prevents them from doing it. In most schools and colleges, professors give many assignments. Students are often overwhelmed. Since homework represents a good percentage of the final grade of a course, students cannot skip it.

This is even worse by the end of a term (semester or quarter). Students get the assignment to write a so-called term paper for practically every course. This is a research paper that must be completed within a short deadline. With several term papers to do, a student can hardly get any time to sleep. Hence, a good alternative is to buy a term paper online written by expert writers.

Several online companies offer writing services to students. For a fee, a professional writer can craft an example that the student can use as a source of inspiration. This helps to complete the term paper faster. Writing from scratch is very time-demanding. However, using such a service provides the student with material that he or she can improve upon.

If you use such a service, you can spare some time. What to do with this spare time? You can rest properly. Assign some hours during the daytime to study for your exams. Then, during the night, have enough sleep. Forget about homework. Let a professional writer lend a hand. This way you’ll make better use of your time.

What Are the Benefits of Sleeping Properly Before an Exam?

Some people believe that devoting more time to revise a topic will help to retain all that information during an exam. While this may be true, it should not be done at the expense of sacrificing sleeping time. Scientists have found that getting proper sleep is good for your memory. While resting, your brain consolidates everything that you learned during the daytime.

Results from other studies suggest that having a nap before an exam will also lead to better performance. But the most amazing result they found is that having rest leads to better long-term memory. Revising your notes constantly brings a short-term benefit only. You can perform well in an exam immediately after going through all your notes. But if you have to do another exam some days later, you probably would not do very well.

On the contrary, if you study your notes and then have proper rest, you will perform well in an immediate exam. If you have to do another exam a few days later, you will perform well again. Scientists think that these results are observed because of the long-term benefits of sleeping properly after studying.

Don’t Sacrifice Your Sleeping Time to Cram Information into Your Brain

Nowadays, students continue the practice of procrastinating studying for exams until the night before. This does not do any good for their grades. College students usually sleep a very few hours on average. But the secret for better grades is sleeping properly. It doesn’t help to stay awake all night long reviewing notes that you will not remember during the exam.

To get the maximum benefit of sleeping, you must sleep several hours. The so-called REM sleep, which is one of the last stages of a sleeping period, helps to improve memory. Hence, it is not enough to have a nap before the exam. You must sleep several hours straight. Use the following tips to sleep more and enhance your academic performance thereby:

  • Turn off all your electronic devices before you go to bed. Social media is tempting, and you can spend the entire night reading posts, chatting, or watching videos. Even the LED light of your laptop or smartphone disrupts your natural sleep process. Hence, no electronics on before you sleep;
  • Try to sleep eight hours straight. This may be difficult as a student. However, if necessary, hire professional help to do your homework so you can have more time to sleep. Before an exam, the minimum sleeping time you should get is 6 hours;
  • Avoid drinking any stimulants like coffee or energy drinks. These products can hurt your sleep process and ultimately your memory;
  • Arrange your activities schedule such that you can study during the daytime and sleep at night. You can take naps during the daytime, but it is always better to sleep properly every night.

Don’t ignore the need for sleep. Sleeping will help you to be a top student.
