Students of Government Science Secondary School, Kankara, Katsina State, kidnapped last Friday have been freed, according to the state government.

Mustapha Inuwa, Secretary to the Katsina State Government, confirmed that about 340 of the abducted students of the Government Science Secondary School, Kankara, have been released.

The government official confirmed this to BBC Hausa on Thursday evening.

According to reports, the schoolboys are on their way to Katsina city and are expected to arrive there close to midnight. BBC further reported that President Muhammadu Buhari would receive the schoolboys at the state capital tomorrow.

The students had been abducted by Boko Haram on the night of Friday, December 11. The terror group claimed that it had kidnapped 523 students and multiple accounts say there were at least 520 victims. It is currently not clear what the plans are for the remaining abductees.

The governor of Zamfara State where the children were held hostage, Bello Matawalle, has also confirmed their release.

“Alhamdulillah for the successful rescue of students kidnapped from Government Science Secondary School Kankara, Katsina State. To God be the Glory,” he tweeted on Thursday.

Details later.
