The race for the governorship tickets ahead of the 2027 general election is gradually intensifying as several serving senators position themselves as leading contenders in their states.

Many of the lawmakers are expected to rely on their political influence, grassroots networks and legislative records to strengthen their chances.

Their early political movements are already reshaping party dynamics, setting up potential clashes with governors, party chieftains and entrenched political blocs.

Below are senators widely considered to be preparing for governorship bids across the country.

Umar Shehu Buba (Bauchi south)

The senator representing Bauchi south, Umar Shehu Buba, has consistently expressed interest in succeeding Bala Mohammed as governor.

As chairman of the senate committee on national security and intelligence, Buba remains the highest-ranking APC political office holder in Bauchi.

Political observers say his influence within the party places him in a strong position for the governorship ticket.

Abdul Ningi (Bauchi central)

The senator representing Bauchi central, Abdul Ningi, is also believed to be preparing for a governorship run.

Ningi, a former senate leader and one of the most experienced lawmakers in the 10th assembly, is regarded as having significant political reach and resources.

His association with former vice-president Atiku Abubakar is seen as a potential advantage, though the governor’s backing remains uncertain.

Mohammed Tahir Monguno (Borno north)

The senator representing Borno north, Mohammed Tahir Monguno, is viewed as a major contender in the state.

Monguno, the chief whip of the 10th senate and a former attorney-general of Borno, is believed to enjoy support from Vice-President Kashim Shettima.

Insiders say his Kanuri heritage and political experience strengthen his prospects of succeeding Babagana Zulum as governor.

Kaka Shehu Lawan (Borno central)

The senator representing Borno central, Kaka Shehu Lawan, is another influential figure in Borno’s succession debate.

A senior advocate of Nigeria, Lawan previously served as commissioner of justice and maintains close ties with Shettima.

His youth, legal background and political loyalty are considered key strengths in his governorship ambition.

Barau Jibrin (Kano north)

The deputy senate president, Barau Jibrin, is widely regarded as the APC’s strongest challenger to the Kwankwassiya political movement in Kano.

Since assuming office, Barau has attracted defectors from the NNPP, positioning himself to challenge Abba Yusuf, the governor.

Support from President Bola Tinubu and growing divisions within the NNPP are seen as boosting his 2027 prospects.

Saliu Mustapha (Kwara central)

The senator representing Kwara central, Saliu Mustapha, is believed to be nurturing ambitions for the governorship.

Mustapha, chairman of the senate committee on agriculture, has reportedly clashed politically with AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, the state governor.

His rising popularity among youths and small business owners makes him a notable contender.

Suleiman Sadiq Umar (Kwara north)

The senator representing Kwara north, Suleiman Sadiq Umar, is also positioning himself for the governorship race.

Popularly known as “3SU”, Umar chairs the senate committees on trade and investment, and rules and business.

Analysts believe zoning considerations and his relationship with AbdulRazaq could favour his ambition.

Tokunbo Abiru (Lagos east)

The senator representing Lagos east, Tokunbo Abiru, is considered one of the most active lawmakers in the upper chamber.

A former bank executive, Abiru has sponsored key financial legislation, including the newly enacted insurance act.

His Ikorodu roots and technocratic credentials are viewed as strengths in a potential succession bid after Babajide Sanwo-Olu.

Aliyu Wadada (Nasarawa west)

The senator representing Nasarawa west, Aliyu Wadada, is widely tipped to enter the governorship race.

As chairman of the senate committee on public accounts, Wadada is said to command strong grassroots support.

His recent turbaning as Magajin Dangin Lafia and ties to the presidency are interpreted as signs of political intent.

Solomon Adeola (Ogun west)

The senator representing Ogun west, Solomon Adeola, is gaining momentum amid agitation for power rotation in the state.

Adeola, chairman of the senate appropriation committee and a close ally of Tinubu, has represented senatorial districts in Lagos and Ogun.

Supporters say zoning sentiments and party influence could work in his favour.

Buhari Abdulfatah (Oyo north)

The senator representing Oyo north, Buhari Abdulfatah, has announced plans to contest the governorship seat.

Abdulfatah, chairman of the senate aviation committee, is serving his third term in the senate.

Party insiders say his influence in Ogbomosho and backing from political heavyweights strengthen his chances.

As the 2027 elections draw closer, more senators are expected to declare interest, setting the stage for intense contests between federal lawmakers and state political power blocs.
