FLASHBACK: How Amaechi dismissed possibility of ADC vice-presidential slot before emergence as Atiku’s running mate

The political trajectory of former Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi, took an unexpected turn on Monday when the African Democratic Congress unveiled him as the running mate to its presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, for the forthcoming general election.

The development came barely months after Amaechi publicly rejected suggestions that he could accept a vice-presidential position within the party.

The former Minister of Transportation had entered the ADC presidential primary as one of the leading contenders, competing against former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar and former Managing Director of the defunct FSB International Bank, Mohammed Hayatu-Deen.

During an interview aired by Daily Trust on May 19, just days before the primary election, Amaechi was asked whether he would support a consensus arrangement and possibly serve as vice-president if another aspirant secured the party’s ticket.

The question drew an immediate and forceful reaction from the former governor.

“Would you stop that nonsense? Stop that,” Amaechi said.

“I didn’t buy a form to be vice-president. Don’t you ever say it. This interview is about the presidency. If you want to interview a vice-president, can I step down so I can get vice-presidential aspirants?”

At the time, the remarks reflected his determination to pursue the ADC presidential ticket and his apparent unwillingness to consider a secondary role within the party’s electoral plans.

The primary election, however, produced a different outcome.

About a week after the interview, Atiku emerged victorious in the contest after securing 1,846,370 votes.

Amaechi finished second with 504,117 votes, while Hayatu-Deen placed third with 177,120 votes.

Following the exercise, Amaechi challenged the outcome, alleging widespread irregularities and voter disenfranchisement during the primary process.

His objections introduced uncertainty regarding his future role within the party and fuelled speculation about the direction of the ADC’s post-primary reconciliation efforts.

Those questions resurfaced on Monday when the party announced Amaechi as Atiku’s running mate, effectively placing the former rivals on a joint presidential ticket.

The announcement was made by the ADC spokesperson, Bolaji Abdullahi, who said the decision followed extensive consultations across various segments of the party and its coalition partners.

According to Abdullahi, the selection process involved engagements with party leaders, coalition stakeholders, youth groups, women organisations and representatives from the country’s geopolitical zones.

He described Amaechi as one of Nigeria’s most experienced political figures and said the former governor enjoys significant support within the party.

Abdullahi said the ticket reflects a strategic partnership designed to strengthen the party’s electoral prospects ahead of the general election.

He stated that the “proposed partnership” between Atiku and Amaechi is the “coming together of two tested statesmen with the experience, national reach, and leadership capacity required to rescue Nigeria from its current challenges and reposition the country for a new era of prosperity, security, and inclusive development”.

The party spokesman also highlighted Amaechi’s lengthy record in public office as one of the key considerations behind the decision.

“Amaechi brings to this ticket one of the most extensive public service records in contemporary Nigerian politics. His experience spans all major pillars of democratic governance,” he said.

Abdullahi further argued that Amaechi’s experience across both executive and legislative institutions provides additional value to the presidential ticket.

He added that the former governor’s background in governance and public administration makes him particularly suited for the vice-presidential role.

The announcement marks a notable shift from Amaechi’s position during the presidential primary campaign, when he dismissed any discussion of serving as a running mate.

His emergence on the ticket now places him at the centre of the ADC’s strategy for the forthcoming election, alongside the same candidate he sought to defeat in the party’s primary.

The development also underscores how political alignments and electoral calculations can evolve rapidly during the build-up to a national election, transforming former competitors into partners pursuing a shared objective.
