Every January, thousands of Nigerian vehicle owners start getting text messages they already know are coming. The reminders land from insurance companies, from third-party apps, sometimes from MVAA itself. Papers are expiring. The licence is due. And for a significant number of people, the response is to put it off, keep driving, and deal with it later. That calculation has always made some sense in a country where queuing at a motor licensing office could burn half a day and still end without a result.

The system has changed in ways that actually matter. Online portals now handle the full payment process for vehicle licence renewal in most states, Abuja included. You can initiate, pay, and generate proof of renewal without stepping into a queue. But the process is not identical across states, the portals are not interchangeable, and there are new identity requirements that changed in late 2025 that catch people off guard. Getting this wrong can cost you more than time.

This guide covers what the online renewal process looks like in 2026, which portals apply to which states, what the fees actually are, and the situations where you still have no choice but to show up in person.

Vehicle Licence Renewal Nigeria 2026: Online Payment Process

The vehicle licence renewal Nigeria 2026 process now runs primarily through state-specific online portals, with Lagos operating through AutoReg and the FCT running through its own DRTS self-service platform. Understanding which portal applies to your state, and what the payment steps actually involve, is the difference between a straightforward renewal and a wasted afternoon. The landscape shifted again in September 2025 with new identity verification requirements that now affect every renewal transaction in Lagos.

What Your Annual Renewal Actually Covers

One thing that confuses a lot of drivers is thinking of the vehicle licence as a single document. It is not. When Nigerians talk about renewing their car papers, they are almost always referring to at least three separate documents that need to be current for you to be legally on the road.

For a private vehicle, the required documents are the vehicle licence itself, a roadworthiness certificate, and third-party motor insurance. The vehicle licence is renewed annually and is issued by the Motor Licensing Authority or its state equivalent. Roadworthiness certifies that your vehicle is fit to be on public roads and is assessed through the Vehicle Inspection Office. Third-party insurance is the minimum insurance cover required by law and is issued by licensed insurance companies.

Commercial vehicles have additional requirements. A hackney permit is needed for commercial passenger vehicles, and depending on the nature of the operation, carriers may also need state carriage permits, heavy goods permits, and driver/conductor badges. Each of these has its own renewal schedule and fee structure. Confusing private and commercial renewal requirements is a common mistake, particularly for business owners who run company vehicles under a private classification when they should be registered commercially.

The vehicle licence specifically is what the online portals primarily facilitate. Roadworthiness often still requires a physical vehicle inspection, and insurance can usually be handled separately through insurers or aggregator platforms. When someone says they renewed their car papers online, they generally mean the vehicle licence payment and possibly the insurance, not necessarily the roadworthiness inspection.

The Portals That Handle Online Renewal in 2026

Nigeria does not have one unified national portal for vehicle licence renewal. The system is decentralised, with states running their own platforms or using regional platforms. Knowing which portal applies to your state is step one.

In Lagos, the official platform is the AutoReg Customer Portal at portal.autoreg.ng. It was launched by the Lagos State Motor Vehicle Administration Agency (MVAA) in August 2021 and is powered by Courteville Business Solutions PLC. This is the only official channel for vehicle licence renewal in Lagos State. MVAA explicitly positioned it as the replacement for in-person visits to MVAA stations, though some physical interaction remains necessary for document collection.

For the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja residents use the DRTS EVREG self-service portal at selfservice.fctevreg.com. The process there follows a similar structure: enter your plate number, verify your vehicle details, make online payment, and generate your receipt. Document collection still requires a visit to your preferred DRTS collection station after payment.

The eVRS portal, which used to operate at evrs.ng and served several states, has suspended its online renewal service. The platform’s notice currently redirects users to their nearest Motor Licensing Office for renewals. This is a significant change that has caught out vehicle owners in states that previously relied on eVRS for their renewals. If you previously used evrs.ng, that route is no longer available.

For other states outside Lagos and Abuja, the picture is less consistent. Some states process renewals through their State Board of Internal Revenue or Motor Licensing Authority offices, while private operators like CarPaddy and CarReg offer agent-based renewal services for Lagos, Ogun State, and Abuja. These agents process the paperwork on your behalf and offer home delivery. They are legitimate intermediaries that represent vehicle owners to the relevant authorities, though they charge service fees on top of the official government fees.

How the Online Payment Process Works, Step by Step

The AutoReg process in Lagos is the most detailed and represents what online renewal looks like across the better-functioning state systems. Here is how it works from start to finish.

The first thing you do is create an account on portal.autoreg.ng. When you sign up, you enter your vehicle registration number, your file ID number, and your residential state, then click search. The system pulls up your vehicle record. An automatic message goes to your email prompting you to set your password and complete the login setup.

Once you are logged in, you click on renew, and the system shows you the services available for your vehicle. You select what you want to renew, which for most private vehicle owners is the vehicle licence. You click pay, complete the payment using the available secure payment options, and the system generates a reference number starting with CPL.

That CPL reference number is important. You can download a soft copy of your renewed licence from the transaction listing page, but to get the printed physical document, you take that CPL number to the nearest MVAA licensing station. They print the customised vehicle licence for you. MVAA also sends SMS and email notifications when your documents are ready.

For Abuja, the FCT DRTS EVREG process is similar in structure: enter your plate number, the system verifies your vehicle details, you make payment online, and you collect your renewal documents from your selected collection station after presenting your payment receipt.

One important note: after a successful payment, the confirmation receipt is your proof of renewal status. In Lagos, you can also verify the authenticity of a renewed licence at verify.autoreglive.com by inputting the licence details. This matters because fake vehicle papers are a genuine problem in Nigeria, and the verification tool lets you confirm that a document is legitimate.

The NIN Requirement That Changed in September 2025

If you renewed your Lagos vehicle licence before September 2025 and are doing it again now, there is one major change you need to know about. Effective 1st September 2025, AutoReg made it mandatory for all Lagos renewals and new registrations to include either a Payer ID, a National Identification Number (NIN), or a NIN-linked phone number.

This applies to everyone processing through the platform, whether you are doing it yourself through the portal or going through a licensed agent. The NIN requirement is part of a broader government push to tie vehicle ownership records to the national identity database. It follows similar NIN linkage mandates that have been applied to SIM cards, banking, and other essential services over the past few years.

If you do not have your NIN handy, you will need it before you can complete the renewal process in Lagos. NINs can be retrieved through the NIMC (National Identity Management Commission) mobile app or by visiting any NIMC enrolment centre. If your NIN-linked phone number is what you want to use, that is the number registered to your NIN in the NIMC database, not just any phone number you currently use.

For other states, the NIN integration with vehicle renewal may not yet be universal, but the trajectory is clear. Lagos is where most regulatory changes in vehicle administration are piloted before they spread nationally, so vehicle owners in other states should expect similar requirements to roll out in the medium term.

What Vehicle Licence Renewal Actually Costs

The cost question is where a lot of people get surprised, because the official government fee for the vehicle licence itself is one number, but the total amount you end up spending depends on vehicle type, additional documents needed, and whether you use an agent.

For the vehicle licence specifically, fees vary by state and vehicle type. In Lagos, the renewal cost for a regular private saloon car runs roughly in the N3,500 to N6,000 range annually, with the Lagos rates historically staying closest to the official gazetted amounts. For larger vehicles and commercial registrations, the figures go higher. The system on AutoReg calculates the exact fee based on the vehicle data in your record.

The broader picture changes when you add roadworthiness and insurance. A 2025 estimate from 360 AutoSecure, a vehicle papers service, put the total renewal budget for a saloon car including additional fees at between N10,000 and N15,000. Third-party insurance for a private vehicle can add between N5,000 and N15,000 depending on the vehicle value and the insurer, and roadworthiness inspection at a VIO office carries its own charges.

If you use a third-party agent or platform, there is a service fee on top of the government charges. Agent services in Lagos typically include home delivery of the physical documents and tend to complete standard renewals within 24 to 48 hours for vehicle papers, though driver’s licence renewals take considerably longer, sometimes six weeks or more. Platforms like CarPaddy and CarReg operate transparently, showing price breakdowns on their sites before you commit.

The eNDL driver’s licence renewal, which runs through the FRSC portal at nigeriadriverslicence.frsc.gov.ng, has its own separate fee structure. The FRSC-published rates are N6,350 for a 3-year renewal and approximately N10,350 to N10,450 for a 5-year renewal. There is also a N2,200 test fee for the short traffic rules assessment at the Vehicle Inspection Service.

When You Still Have to Go In Person

The online process handles the payment and generates the documentation, but it does not eliminate all physical interaction. There are still situations where you have to show up somewhere in person.

Document collection is the main one. Even after a successful online payment, Lagos vehicle owners need to visit an MVAA licensing station with their CPL reference number to collect the printed vehicle licence. Abuja vehicle owners similarly need to go to their selected DRTS collection station. The online process handles the administrative and payment side; the physical document is still issued at an office.

Driver’s licence renewal is more involved than vehicle licence renewal. Through the FRSC portal, you complete the application and payment online, but you still need to visit a Driver’s Licence Centre for the VIO driving assessment, application endorsement by a Board of Internal Revenue officer, and biometric data capture. After biometric capture, a temporary driver’s licence valid for 60 days is issued while the permanent card is processed. The FRSC typically takes one to two weeks after biometric capture to issue the new card.

Roadworthiness certification requires a physical inspection of the vehicle. There is no online substitute for a VIO inspector looking at your car. In Lagos, the VIO overhauled the roadworthiness process in January 2022 and now requires vehicles to go through a Computerised Vehicle Inspection Centre. This means bringing your car to an approved testing facility, not just paying a fee.

If there are data errors in your vehicle record, those also require an in-person visit or direct contact with the relevant DRTS or MVAA office. On the AutoReg portal, you can only edit certain fields like email, NIN, and preferred collection station. Anything beyond that requires a physical visit or official correspondence with the licensing authority.

How Lagos Handles Renewal Differently from Other States

Lagos has built the most developed online vehicle administration infrastructure in the country. The MVAA, established by Lagos State Law No. 20 in April 2007, was specifically created to modernise vehicle licensing and registration in the state. Its AutoReg portal, the NIN integration, the delivery option through approved logistics partners, the SMS and email notification system, and the dedicated verification tool at verify.autoreglive.com are not features that exist in most other states.

In most of Nigeria outside Lagos and Abuja, vehicle licence renewal still runs primarily through physical State Board of Internal Revenue or Motor Licensing Authority offices. The eVRS portal that served some of these states has now suspended online services, and while private agent platforms like CarReg advertise nationwide delivery, their coverage is concentrated in Lagos, Abuja, and a handful of other major cities.

The practical implication is that a vehicle owner in Kano, Enugu, or Port Harcourt faces a different experience from their counterpart in Lagos. The process may still require a full in-person visit to the motor licensing office, queuing, and manual document processing. This is not a problem unique to vehicle papers; it reflects the broader gap in digital service infrastructure between Lagos and the rest of the country.

Anambra State’s government actually sent a delegation to study MVAA operations in Lagos, which is documented on the MVAA’s own website. That tells you something about where the national baseline sits and how far ahead the Lagos model is. Other states are learning from it, but implementation takes time.

What to Do If Your Papers Are Already Expired

A common assumption among Nigerian drivers is that there is a grace period after a vehicle document expires during which you can still drive legally. There is no such grace period. Nigerian law, specifically sections 5, 10, and 23 of the Federal Road Safety Commission (Establishment) Act 2007 and Regulations 45 and 46 of the National Road Traffic Regulations 2012, contains no provision for a grace period. The FRSC expects renewal before expiry.

If your vehicle licence has already expired, you can still renew it through the same online process. The AutoReg portal handles expired renewals, and the FRSC driver’s licence portal does too, though you may need to complete the full biometric process again depending on how long ago your licence expired. What you cannot do is continue driving legally on an expired document and treat it as a minor infraction. An expired vehicle licence during a stop by FRSC, VIO, or police is a verifiable offence.

The more useful strategy is to renew early. The FRSC’s own guidance notes that a driver’s licence can be renewed from 30 days before its expiry date. For vehicle papers, the practical advice is to start the process at least a month before expiry to account for any delays in document collection, inspection scheduling, or system issues.

If you have let papers lapse and want to regularise everything at once, working through an agent service can be faster because they understand which documents to prioritise and can handle the different agencies simultaneously. The cost is higher, but the time savings can be significant if you are dealing with multiple expired documents across vehicle licence, roadworthiness, and insurance.

Getting Your Papers in Order Before You Get Stopped

The online vehicle licence renewal process in Nigeria has genuinely improved, at least for Lagos and Abuja vehicle owners. Paying from your phone, skipping the queue, and getting an SMS when your documents are ready is a real upgrade from what existed even four years ago. The AutoReg portal works. The FCT DRTS platform works. The gap is that not every state has caught up, and even where the online process is smooth, the collection step and roadworthiness inspection still pull you back into the physical world.

The September 2025 NIN requirement adds a layer that some people will not have anticipated. If you go to renew your Lagos vehicle licence in 2026 without your NIN or NIN-linked phone number ready, the process stops there. Getting that sorted in advance is the practical first step before anything else.

What the online process cannot fix is the habit of leaving renewal until papers are already expired. The law does not give you extra time, the FRSC does not look the other way, and the cost of being stopped by law enforcement with expired papers adds up faster than the renewal fee. Doing this once a year, on time, with the right documents in hand, is genuinely the easier path.
