Nigeria recorded a major academic milestone at the Grand Finale of the International STEM Olympiad in Rome, Italy, where three students secured a combined four gold medals in Mathematics and Science.
The achievement drew attention to the growing potential of young Nigerian talents in global science and mathematics competitions.
The success of the students was announced by education advocate and Chief Executive Officer of Educare, Alex Onyia, who sponsored their participation after they distinguished themselves at the Southeast Mathematics Olympiad.
The competition, held at the Università Campus Bio-Medico di Roma, brought together contestants from more than 150 countries to compete in Mathematics and Science categories.
Among Nigeria’s representatives were 11-year-old Onyedikachi Egejurum, 13-year-old Chimdiebube Onwubiko and 17-year-old Don Anele Munachimso, all of whom qualified through outstanding performances in the Southeast Mathematics Olympiad.
The regional contest, organised by Onyia, attracted more than 11,500 participants and served as the pathway for the trio’s emergence on the international stage.
The first indication of Nigeria’s success came when Onyia announced that Onwubiko and Munachimso had each secured gold medals.
“The wait is over. We have two golds: Chimdiebube Onwubiko and Don Anele Munachimso. We are the best in the world!”
Further celebrations followed when Munachimso added another gold medal after excelling in Science.
“More good news. Don Anele Munachimso also won gold in Science. He is the best in world science. Remember, he is the best in IGCSE Chemistry in Nigeria. The investment is worth it,” Onyia wrote.
Nigeria’s medal haul increased again when Egejurum emerged victorious in the Primary Mathematics category.
Confirming the development, Onyia wrote, “Onyedikachi Egejurum got a Gold. He is the best in Mathematics in the world Primary Category. This is the beginning of greatness for the country.”
The accomplishment placed the three students among the standout performers at an event that featured some of the brightest young minds from across the globe.
Before the Olympiad commenced, Onyia had expressed confidence in the ability of the Nigerian team to compete successfully against their peers from other countries.
Speaking about Munachimso, who represented Nigeria in the senior category, he highlighted the teenager’s academic achievements and personal qualities.
“He is currently the best in Chemistry for IGCSE in Nigeria. His head is filled with maths and science. He is such a gentle and well-behaved boy. He is a star,” Onyia said.
The education advocate also predicted a strong outing for Egejurum, who competed in the Primary Mathematics category.
During the event, Onyia disclosed that the 11-year-old opted to participate in the Science category as well despite not preparing specifically for the contest.
“Our star boy, Egejurum Onyedikachi, decided to participate again today in the International STEM Olympiad finale, science category, unprepared… We are rooting for him to win double gold,” he wrote.
Although the youngster’s gold medal came in Mathematics, his decision to test himself in an additional category underscored the confidence and ambition that characterised the Nigerian contingent.
The performance of the three students has also renewed conversations about the importance of investing in science, technology, engineering and mathematics education across the country.
Their success demonstrated that Nigerian students can compete favourably with their counterparts from leading educational systems when given the necessary support and opportunities.
It also highlighted the role of academic competitions in identifying and nurturing exceptional talents from an early age.
For a country that has periodically faced concerns about participation and representation in major international academic contests, the achievements in Rome offered a positive example of what targeted investment and mentorship can produce.
With four gold medals secured against competitors from more than 150 nations, the trio returned from Italy with a result that placed Nigeria among the standout performers at one of the world’s leading STEM competitions.
Their accomplishment has added another chapter to Nigeria’s growing record of excellence in international academic contests and reinforced the potential of young scholars to achieve global recognition.
