WORK OPPORTUNITIES: Top US firms sponsoring visas for skilled Nigerians and application process

For many Nigerian professionals seeking international career opportunities, the United States remains one of the most attractive destinations, particularly through employer-sponsored work visa programmes designed for highly skilled foreign workers.

A recent publication by Ellis Visa Sponsors, a United States immigration law firm, highlighted leading American companies that continue to sponsor foreign professionals under the H-1B visa programme, one of the country’s most recognised employment-based visa pathways.

The H-1B visa allows American employers to recruit qualified foreign nationals for specialised positions that generally require at least a bachelor’s degree or an equivalent professional qualification.

Although demand for the visa significantly exceeds the annual quota allocated by US authorities, several multinational corporations continue to sponsor thousands of foreign workers each year across sectors including technology, consulting, engineering and professional services.

According to data compiled by Ellis Visa Sponsors, which tracks more than 180,000 employers in the United States, a number of globally recognised organisations remain among the largest sponsors of H-1B visas.

The immigration law firm explained that sponsorship arrangements involve an employer or eligible family member formally supporting a foreign national’s visa or permanent residency application in accordance with US immigration regulations.

The publication stated, “Getting U.S. visa sponsorship can feel complicated, especially if you’re not sure where to start. The rules are detailed, the paperwork is strict, and mistakes can lead to delays or denials.

“This guide breaks down visa sponsorship in simple terms—what it is, who qualifies, and what steps are involved—so you can make informed decisions with confidence.

”A US visa sponsor is either a US employer or an eligible family member (typically a U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident) who formally supports a foreign national’s visa or Green Card process. For employment-based sponsorship, the employer agrees to comply with U.S. immigration laws, including requirements set by U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) and the Department of Labor (DOL).

“This often includes filing petitions, paying the prevailing wage, and maintaining compliance throughout the individual’s employment. Both non-immigrant work visas (temporary) and immigrant visas (permanent residence) may require sponsorship.”

Among the companies identified as major H-1B visa sponsors in 2026 are Google, Amazon, Microsoft, Ernst & Young, Deloitte Consulting, Accenture, Apple, Intel, IBM and Meta.

The ranking reflects the continued demand for specialised talent by some of the world’s largest technology and consulting organisations.

To qualify for sponsorship, applicants are generally required to secure a legitimate employment offer from a US-based employer and demonstrate that the position falls within an approved visa category.

Prospective workers are also expected to possess the educational qualifications, professional experience or specialised expertise required for the role being offered.

The application process begins with employer registration through the H-1B electronic lottery system, which is typically conducted annually.

During this stage, sponsoring employers submit registration details for selected candidates and pay the prescribed registration fee.

Candidates chosen through the lottery proceed to the next stage, which involves the submission of a Labour Condition Application to the US Department of Labor.

The application is reviewed to ensure compliance with labour regulations and wage requirements before certification is granted.

Following approval, employers are required to file Form I-129, known as the Petition for a Nonimmigrant Worker, with the US Citizenship and Immigration Services.

Supporting documents submitted during this stage include certified labour documents, job descriptions, evidence of qualifications and the relevant filing fees.

For candidates already residing in the United States, approval of the petition may facilitate a change of status, allowing them to begin employment on the authorised commencement date.

Applicants outside the United States must complete additional consular procedures before travelling.

These include submitting Form DS-160 through the Consular Electronic Application Center, paying the required visa fee and attending an interview at a US embassy or consulate.

Required documents for the interview include a valid international passport, the DS-160 confirmation page, copies of approved immigration petitions and notices, payment receipts and passport photographs that meet US Department of State specifications.

As competition for H-1B visas remains intense, immigration experts advise prospective applicants to ensure that all documentation is complete and submitted within the stipulated timelines to improve their chances of a successful application.
