WAEC 2026 Results Are Out: How to Check Your WASSCE Scores on Waecdirect.org, the Mobile App and by SMS

The wait is over. The West African Examinations Council released the 2026 West African Senior School Certificate Examination results for school candidates on Wednesday, August 5, 2026, and millions of Nigerian students can now log on to find out where they stand.

Nearly 1.96 million candidates from nowhere fewer than 24,200 secondary schools sat the exam between April 21 and June 19. Out of that number, 1,200,514 candidates, or 61.54 percent, scored credits and above in at least five subjects, including English Language and Mathematics. That’s the figure universities and polytechnics will be checking as candidates start their admission applications.

Not everyone got good news, though. WAEC withheld the results of 167,486 candidates over exam malpractice, which works out to 8.59 percent of everyone who wrote the exam. It’s a big number, but worth noting it’s actually down from 9.7 percent in 2025, so the council’s crackdown on cheating appears to be having some effect.

If your result hasn’t shown up yet, don’t panic just yet. Withheld results usually mean your case is still being reviewed, and WAEC has advised affected candidates to reach out to their nearest state office or their school’s exam officer for guidance.

What You Need Before You Check Your Result

Before you go anywhere near a browser, make sure you have three things sorted:

• Your 10-digit examination number. This is your 7-digit centre number followed by your 3-digit candidate number (something like 4123456789). Keep this number safe long after result season too, because you’ll need it again for university and polytechnic applications.
• A valid Result Checker PIN and serial number. Old scratch cards from previous years still work, and can be reused up to five times, but only for the same candidate’s examination number each time. If you’re checking for more than one child or sibling, you’ll need a separate card for each of them.
• Either an internet-enabled phone or computer, or a basic mobile phone for SMS checking, in case data isn’t readily available.

If you don’t already have a PIN, you can buy one for ₦5,000 through the official WAEC portal at waeconline.org. Click “Buy WAEC Result Checker,” select your exam type, fill in your details, and complete payment. Your PIN and serial number are issued right after.

Lost your old scratch card details? WAEC now lets you recover your Serial Number and PIN electronically, using the National Identification Number you submitted at registration. Here’s how:

1. Go to the “Serial Number and PIN” menu on the WAEC portal.
2. Select 2026 as your examination year and choose the correct diet.
3. Enter your examination number and your NIN.
4. Provide your email address and phone number to receive a One-Time Password.
5. Input the OTP to generate a fresh Serial Number and PIN.

How to Check Your 2026 WASSCE Result Online

This is still the fastest and most reliable route, and the one most candidates use.

1. Go to waecdirect.org using any internet-enabled phone, tablet or computer. Type the address carefully; there are copycat sites out there designed to steal your PIN and your money, and the real one is waecdirect.org, nothing else.
2. Enter your 10-digit examination number.
3. Select 2026 as the examination year.
4. Choose School Candidate Result as the examination type (or Private Candidate if you sat the exam through GCE).
5. Enter your e-PIN and serial number.
6. Click Submit.

Your result should load within seconds. Once it’s on screen, print it, save it as a PDF, and email a copy to yourself. You will need multiple copies later for admission processes, so it’s worth having backups saved in more than one place rather than relying on a single printout.

How to Check Your Result Through the WAEC Mobile App

If you’d rather use your phone than a browser, the WAEC Result Checker app does the same job.

1. Search for “WAEC Result Checker” on the Google Play Store and download the app carrying the official WAEC logo. Be careful here too; there are lookalike apps floating around with similar names and icons.
2. Open the app and enter your examination number.
3. Select 2026 as the examination year and pick your examination type.
4. Enter your PIN and serial number, then submit.

Your result displays right there in the app, and you can download it for safekeeping.

How to Check Your Result Without Internet, Using SMS

Not everyone has stable data, and WAEC has kept the SMS option running for exactly that reason. It works on MTN, Glo and Airtel lines.

Open your messages, type WAEC, leave a space, then add your 10-digit examination number, and send it to 32327. Your result comes back as a text message shortly after. Standard SMS rates apply, so check your network’s charges before sending if you’re on a tight budget.

Knowing Your WAEC Grades

WAEC grades run from A1 to F9, and it helps to know what each band actually means before you start comparing notes with classmates:

• A1, B2, B3 – Distinction and merit passes
• C4, C5, C6 – Credit passes (the minimum most universities and polytechnics ask for)
• D7, E8 – Ordinary passes, below credit level
• F9 – Fail

If your ambition is university admission this year, the C4 to C6 range in five subjects, including English and Maths, is generally the benchmark to hit.

What If Your Result Was Withheld?

With 167,486 candidates in this bracket, plenty of families are asking the same question right now. A withheld result doesn’t automatically mean disqualification; it usually means WAEC flagged something during the marking or exam process that needs further checking, ranging from suspected malpractice to administrative issues at a particular centre. Your first move should be to contact your school’s exam officer or the nearest WAEC state office, since they’re best placed to tell you exactly why your result is on hold and what happens next.

A Quick Word on Scams

Result season, unfortunately, is also scam season. Street vendors selling “cheap” result checker cards are a common trap, and a lot of those cards turn out to be fake or already used by someone else. Stick to the official WAEC portal, or verified vendors if you’re buying online, and never enter your PIN or serial number on any site other than waecdirect.org.

With results now live, the next few weeks will be busy ones for candidates and parents alike, between checking results, sorting out withheld cases, and preparing for the next stage of university and polytechnic applications. If there’s one thing to take away from this year’s release, it’s that the earlier you sort out your PIN and confirm your result, the smoother the rest of the admission season tends to go.
