Team Nigeria concluded its campaign at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland, with 24 medals, finishing seventh on the overall medals table after securing 10 gold, seven silver and seven bronze medals.

Although the country’s total was 10 medals fewer than its performance at the 2022 Games in Birmingham, the reduced tally reflected the smaller scale of this year’s competition following the removal of several sports from the programme.

Glasgow assumed hosting duties after Victoria, Australia, withdrew from staging the Games in July 2023, prompting organisers to streamline the event because of limited time and financial resources.

The scaled-down programme excluded sports such as wrestling and table tennis, disciplines that have traditionally contributed significantly to Nigeria’s Commonwealth Games medal haul.

Despite the reduced number of events, Nigerian athletes delivered several memorable performances that produced historic achievements and new records.

Twenty-year-old Samuel Ogazi became the first Nigerian to win the men’s 400 metres gold medal at the Commonwealth Games, while Kayinsola Ajayi claimed bronze in the men’s 100 metres to give Nigeria its first medal in the event in two decades.

Folashade Oluwafemiayo successfully defended her para-powerlifting heavyweight title after setting a new world record, while Goodness Nwachukwu also retained her women’s para discus F42-44/61-64 crown with another world-record performance.

Veteran para-powerlifter Roland Ezuruike, competing at the age of 50, added a silver medal in the men’s lightweight category.

Athletics emerged as Nigeria’s most productive sport with 13 medals, while para-powerlifting accounted for six podium finishes.
