Lionel Richie is back in a hospital bed, and for the second time in three months, fans are anxiously waiting on word about the 77-year-old music legend’s condition.
The Grammy-winning singer checked himself into a St. Louis-area hospital late Saturday night, just hours after wrapping up a sold-out performance at The Muny in Forest Park. According to multiple entertainment outlets, Richie was placed in the intensive care unit so doctors could run a battery of tests, with early indications pointing to something relatively mild: dehydration.
A Show That Ended With a Chair
By most accounts, the concert itself was a triumph. Richie closed out The Muny’s 2026 season with a career-spanning setlist stretching back through his Commodores years and into his solo run of hits, “Easy,” “Three Times a Lady,” “Dancing on the Ceiling,” and the rest of the catalog that made him one of the best-selling artists in music history.
But as the night wore on, something shifted. During the show’s closing number, “All Night Long,” Richie waved his crew over and asked for a chair to be brought onstage. Video circulating from the concert shows him finishing the song seated rather than on his feet, a small but telling detail that fans in the crowd immediately picked up on.
Richie himself seemed to acknowledge that something had been off all tour. Addressing the audience earlier in the show, he admitted that recent weeks had rattled him, saying he’d been struggling to figure out what exactly was going on with his body. At one point he was seen sipping a red electrolyte drink onstage, joking with the crowd that the stuff tasted terrible but got the job done.

That episode led doctors to advise him to rest, and two subsequent tour stops in Chicago and Columbus, Ohio, were postponed on medical orders. Richie later thanked fans for their outpouring of support, writing on social media in early July that he was feeling well and grateful for the love he’d received.
The St. Louis stop marked his first show since the Earth, Wind & Fire leg of the tour wrapped, making this latest hospitalization a fresh setback just as he appeared to be getting back into rhythm.
What Happens to the Rest of the Tour?
Richie’s touring calendar remains packed for the rest of the year. He and Earth, Wind & Fire are due to reunite for rescheduled dates in San Francisco, Chicago, and Columbus starting in late September, before Richie moves into a run of solo dates. A Las Vegas residency at the Encore Theater at Wynn Las Vegas is scheduled to run from mid-October through mid-November, and a show in São Paulo, Brazil, is listed for December.
Whether the St. Louis hospitalization will force any changes to that schedule is still unclear. No cancellations or postponements have been announced as of this writing, and Richie’s team has not indicated that any of the upcoming shows are in jeopardy.
For now, the message from those closest to him has been consistent: this is a man taking care of himself, not a medical emergency.
