Bella vs Sheggz: Attempted murder, ₦19.8m refund, breach of promise to marry, ₦2bn torture damages & other latest demands

For almost four years, Bella Okagbue and Segun Olusemo, popularly known as Sheggz, were one of the most followed couples to emerge from the Big Brother Naija house. Their relationship began in 2022, survived several public disagreements and became a major part of their lives outside the reality show.

But by 2026, the relationship had taken a very different turn. It started with a highly publicised breakup that now moved into a legal battle, with lawyers on both sides exchanging letters and serious claims being made about what allegedly happened during the relationship.

A fresh letter said to have been issued by Bella’s lawyers has now brought some of the most serious allegations yet into the open.

How Bella And Sheggz’s Relationship Began

Bella & Sheggz

Bella and Sheggz met during the 2022 edition of Big Brother Naija and quickly became one of the show’s most popular couples.

Their relationship continued after they left the reality show, with the pair building a large following around what fans popularly called “Shella”. For years, they publicly celebrated birthdays, milestones and their relationship, while Sheggz repeatedly spoke about his feelings for Bella and his hopes for their future.

However, the relationship eventually came to an end. In August 2026, Sheggz confirmed that they had not been together since January 2026. He also denied cheating on Bella and said he had once bought an engagement ring because he genuinely believed the relationship could lead to marriage.

By May 2026, signs of trouble had already become visible online. The pair reportedly unfollowed each other on Instagram and removed some of their pictures, further fuelling speculation that the relationship was over.  What followed was not a quiet separation.

The Breakup Becomes Public

By August, the private problems between the former couple had begun spilling into public view.

On August 19, 2026, Sheggz addressed the controversy surrounding their relationship, saying he had remained silent for the sake of his family but felt compelled to speak after believing his name and character were being attacked.

He said he had spent much of 2025 dealing with health problems and had returned to Nigeria in October that year. He also maintained that he had been single since January 2026.

Around the same period, alleged WhatsApp conversations between Bella and members of Sheggz’s family began circulating.

One of the major issues was money. In one alleged October 2023 conversation, Bella complained to Sheggz’s mother about ₦11 million she said Sheggz owed her. She reportedly said bringing up the money often resulted in arguments.

Another set of conversations showed Bella expressing frustration over their future together and asking Sheggz to let her go if he was still uncertain about marrying her.

The private relationship was quickly becoming a public dispute.

August 21: Sheggz’s Lawyers Fire The First Legal Shot

The situation escalated on August 21, 2026, when Sheggz’s lawyers reportedly issued Bella a cease-and-desist and defamation notice.

His legal team accused Bella of making statements they considered damaging to his reputation and demanded that she retract the alleged defamatory comments, among other things. The notice reportedly also referenced claims involving abuse, money and Sheggz’s family.
Rather than ending the dispute, the letter opened another chapter.

August 24: Bella’s Lawyers Respond

Bella

Three days later, on August 24, Bella’s lawyers responded to Sheggz’s legal notice. They rejected the allegations against their client as baseless and argued that Bella had been speaking about her own experiences during the relationship. But her lawyers did more than defend her.

They raised allegations of their own, including an alleged breach of promise to marry and claims that Sheggz obtained loans from Bella under false pretences. They also warned a member of Sheggz’s legal team over alleged unsolicited calls and messages to Bella at odd hours.

The dispute was no longer simply about what either person had said online. It was becoming a pre-litigation battle.

The Money Dispute

Money is one of the major issues contained in Bella’s latest lawyers’ letter released on September 7. The letter alleges that Bella provided Sheggz with money during the relationship and that some of the money remained unpaid.

It refers to a June 20, 2025 complaint in which Bella allegedly confronted Sheggz about money she said he had spent after she had given it to him. According to the letter, Bella complained that she had given him money and that he had used it, while Sheggz allegedly responded in a way that her lawyers characterised as dismissive.

The letter also refers to another alleged exchange in which Bella complained about money and Sheggz allegedly told her that he would repay her when he had the money. The lawyers now put the amount being demanded at ₦19,826,000 and £10,237.

That is significantly higher than the ₦11 million figure that had previously featured in the leaked conversations circulating online.

The latest demand even goes beyond the earlier alleged ₦11 million debt that was mentioned in a leaked conversation online.

The Marriage Promise Becomes Another Legal Issue

The second major part of Bella’s case concerns marriage. Her lawyers argue that Sheggz repeatedly represented that he intended to marry Bella and that those representations influenced her decisions during the relationship.

The letter cites messages in which Sheggz allegedly spoke about marrying Bella. One particularly striking message referenced in the document was sent on May 29, 2024, at about 4:44 a.m.According to the letter, Sheggz told Bella:

“Babe, I really want to marry you. I really think you’re everything that’s missing.”

The lawyers also referred to discussions about wedding plans, including an alleged plan involving a court wedding in London in September, a traditional wedding in December and a white wedding around Valentine’s period, with Lake Como mentioned in connection with their plans.

The letter argues that the alleged promise to marry was not simply casual talk but formed part of the expectations Bella had for the relationship. For this, her lawyers are demanding ₦500 million in damages for alleged breach of promise to marry.

The Most Serious Allegations: Torture And Attempted Murder

Sheggz

The most serious part of the new letter concerns allegations of physical and emotional abuse. Bella’s lawyers describe what they call a “documented case of continuous torture and attempted murder.”

They allege that Bella suffered verbal, emotional, psychological and physical abuse during the relationship.

One incident highlighted in the letter concerns an alleged confrontation in 2023, when Bella was reportedly prevented from leaving a residence. The document cites a message allegedly sent by Bella to Sheggz’s mother asking her to intervene.

It also refers to another 2023 account in which Bella allegedly complained to his mother about persistent emotional, verbal and physical problems and asked her to manage the situation better.

In another section, the lawyers point to November 2025 conversations in which they say Bella expressed fear for her life. They allege that the conversations included claims of threats to kill her and repeated strangulation.

The lawyers further allege that Sheggz at some point covered Bella’s mouth and nose and pressed her neck. They characterise the alleged act as attempted asphyxiation and attempted murder.

These are extremely serious allegations, and the letter says documentary evidence, including chats and videos, exists to support Bella’s account.

The legal team also refers to Nigerian laws and legal authorities in setting out its position.

Why Bella Is Demanding ₦2 billion

The alleged physical and psychological abuse forms the basis of another major demand. Bella’s lawyers are demanding ₦2 billion as compensation for what they describe as physical, emotional and psychological torture.

The demand is separate from the ₦500 million being sought over the alleged breach of promise to marry. The letter also lists alleged injuries and consequences including psychological distress, physical harm, emotional distress and professional embarrassment.

Together, the two major damages claims amount to ₦2.5 billion, before the separate financial demand of ₦19.826 million and £10,237.

Bella’s Other Demands

The letter does not stop at financial compensation. Bella’s lawyers also demand that Sheggz:

  1. Pay ₦19,826,000 and £10,237.
  2. Pay ₦500 million for the alleged breach of promise to marry.
  3. Immediately retract allegedly defamatory and malicious publications.
  4. Remove Bella’s pictures and other images from his social media platforms.
  5. Publish a written public apology on platforms where the alleged defamatory statements appeared.
  6. Pay ₦2 billion for alleged physical, emotional and psychological torture.
  7. Give a written undertaking not to make further defamatory publications concerning Bella.

The letter gives Sheggz three days from receipt to comply with the demands. See screenshot of letter below:

What Happens If Sheggz Does Not Comply?

Bella’s lawyers warn that failure to meet the demands within the stated period could lead to further legal action.

According to the letter, they reserve the right to approach the appropriate courts and authorities, institute proceedings for alleged defamation and pursue other available legal remedies.

The lawyers also state that they may seek exemplary and aggravated damages of ₦5 billion if the matter proceeds.
That means the financial exposure threatened in the letter could go well beyond the immediate ₦2.5 billion damages claims.

From “Shella” To A Legal Battle

The latest development marks a dramatic change from how Bella and Sheggz’s relationship was first presented to the public.
They met as young reality stars in 2022, became one of the most recognisable couples from their season and continued their relationship away from the cameras.

By January 2026, according to Sheggz, the relationship had ended.
By May, their social media activity suggested that things had deteriorated further.
In August, the former couple moved from public accusations to lawyers’ letters.
And by September, a fresh legal document containing allegations of attempted murder, torture, harassment, financial disputes and breach of promise to marry had become public.

The dispute is therefore no longer simply about why Bella and Sheggz broke up. It is now about what each side says happened during the relationship and whether those claims will eventually be tested in court.

Conclusion

The Bella and Sheggz relationship once played out largely in front of fans who watched their romance grow from the Big Brother Naija house into a relationship that lasted for years.

Its ending has taken a very different path. Whether the matter ends with a settlement, further exchanges between their legal teams or a full court case will determine what comes next.
