GoFundMe Deactivates David Johnson Fundraiser: Why the Viral $745K Texas Campaign Was Pulled

An 81-year-old man hauling lost suitcases up steep stairs to pay for his wife’s cancer care was the kind of story the internet rallies behind. Within days, the fundraiser built around him had passed $700,000. Then GoFundMe deactivated the David Johnson fundraiser, refunded every donor and left a lot of people asking what went wrong.

How the Don Johnson story went viral

Since 2023, Johnson has worked as an independent contractor, returning delayed or lost luggage from Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport to its owners. He lives in The Colony, Texas, and has said the job was the only work he could find while his wife, Josephine, battles cancer. Because he is a contractor, he uses his own car, and reports say he has put more than 200,000 miles on it.

The moment that pushed his story into public view was a short clip of him struggling with a heavy bag. The fundraiser’s original text described an 81-year-old man slowly carrying lost luggage up a steep flight of stairs, as seen on a door camera. A TikTok account called @helpdonretire shared the video, and the fundraiser followed. Its early target was $150,000, meant to let Johnson retire and focus on caring for Josephine.

The target was passed almost immediately. Within days, more than 5,300 people had given over $281,000. Not long after, the total topped $370,000. Early reports put the figure near $600,000, and later coverage settled on about $745,000.

Why GoFundMe removed the fundraiser

The collapse came fast. GoFundMe told NewsNation it received a tip on September 25 questioning the identity of the woman running the campaign, who had described herself only as a neighbor named “Erin.” Its Trust & Safety team opened an investigation, which the company says is standard practice.

During a recorded call, GoFundMe asked the organizer directly whether Don and Josephine were her parents, and she said they were. The “neighbor” who had appealed to strangers was, in fact, the couple’s daughter.

She told the company she created the “Erin” persona because she believed the story would connect with more people if it seemed to come from a stranger rather than a daughter asking for help. She said she filmed the video herself and maintained that everything else was true: her father’s job, her mother’s diagnosis and the financial strain.

GoFundMe’s public position is short and firm. A spokesperson said the Trust & Safety team found factual misrepresentations that directly violate the Terms of Service. The company also stressed that it was the organizer’s identity, not the parents’ story, that got the page pulled. The fundraiser was removed and all donors were refunded.

What happens to the Johnsons and the donors

For donors, the outcome is simple. Their money is coming back. For the Johnson family, it is far more painful.

In a recent TikTok video, the couple’s daughter, identified by Fox News as Amy Johnson, said the campaign had gathered more than $700,000, but her parents would not receive it because the donations were being refunded over “a technicality.” GoFundMe would not describe it that way. In its view, a campaign that hides who is behind it changes what donors think they are supporting.

Josephine Johnson had told FOX 4 that the prayers and messages from strangers gave her real encouragement during treatment. That goodwill does not disappear with the fundraiser, but the financial relief it promised has.

Why the organizer’s identity matters to GoFundMe

It is fair to ask why a daughter helping her parents is a violation at all. The answer lies in what donors are told. People give to a campaign partly because of who appears to be vouching for it. A neighbor with no stake in the outcome reads as more objective than a family member, and that difference can move people to give more. When the presented relationship turns out to be invented, the company treats it as deception, whether or not the underlying hardship is real.

Several details remain unclear from the coverage so far. Earlier reports named the organizer as a local resident, Erin Howell, and it is not yet clear how that account fits with the daughter’s explanation. The role of the doorbell footage in the original story has also not been fully addressed. Marriage length varies by report, with most saying 57 years. I could not open the full NewsNation report, so some points here rest on partial excerpts and other outlets’ summaries. I’d check the latest coverage and any statement from the family before publishing.

What this means for anyone giving online

The case is a reminder that a moving video is not the same as verified facts. If you plan to donate to a viral campaign, a few habits help:

  • Check who the organizer is and how they are connected to the person in need.
  • Look for updates that show the money being used as described.
  • Be wary of urgency and emotional pressure.
  • Use the platform’s report tool if something feels off.

For GoFundMe, refunding everyone is the platform protecting the trust its business depends on. For the Johnsons, it is a hard end to what looked, for a few days, like a miracle.
