Lamine Yamal Champions League Record: Youngest Ever to Reach 25 Goal Contributions

Lamine Yamal added another line to his Champions League record on Tuesday night, and he did it without scoring. The Barcelona winger set up two goals in three minutes against Galatasaray in Istanbul, becoming the youngest player in Champions League history to reach 25 goal contributions. Barcelona won 4-1. Yamal was 19 years and 92 days old.

The previous holder of the milestone was Kylian Mbappé, who got there at 20 years and 306 days. That puts Yamal more than a year and a half ahead of the Frenchman, and a long way clear of the rest of the list.

How Yamal reached 25 Champions League goal contributions

Galatasaray made the start Barcelona feared. Aleksey Batrakov put the hosts ahead, and a noisy crowd at RAMS Park made sure every Barcelona touch was met with whistles. João Cancelo levelled things up for the visitors, and then Yamal took over the game.

His passes set up Fermín López in the 50th minute and Anthony Gordon in the 53rd. Karim Adeyemi added a fourth late on. The two assists took Yamal from 23 contributions to 25, and his tally in the competition now stands at 12 goals and 13 assists.

One of the two assists drew particular attention. Reports described it as an “almost rabona” delivery, and Yamal explained the thinking behind it afterwards. Barça Blaugranes scored him a nine out of ten and named him the match’s MVP, writing that the two assists alone made the case. He also collected the player of the match award.

He has now provided four assists in two Champions League appearances this season, and Barcelona sit top of the league phase table with two wins from two.

The youngest players to reach 25 Champions League goal contributions

The gap Yamal has opened is the most striking part of the record. According to Tribuna, the list reads:

Rank Player Age at 25 contributions
1 Lamine Yamal (Barcelona) 19 years, 92 days
2 Kylian Mbappé (Monaco, PSG) 20 years, 306 days
3 Erling Haaland (Salzburg, Dortmund) 21 years, 139 days

Jude Bellingham and Lionel Messi complete the top five, according to News Directory 3. Messi was also the previous youngest Barcelona player to reach 25 in the competition, so Yamal has taken that club mark from him as well.

Yamal’s Champions League journey so far

Nothing about this arrived overnight. Yamal made his Champions League debut in September 2023 at 16 years and 68 days old, which made him the third youngest debutant in the competition’s history. The records have come steadily since then:

  • Youngest assist provider: at 16 years and 153 days, away to Antwerp, he set up Ferran Torres.
  • Youngest knockout-stage player: at 16 years and 223 days, against Napoli.
  • Youngest starter: at 16 years and 83 days, in the 1-0 win at Porto.
  • Youngest to score and assist in the same game: at 17 years and 241 days, in the round of 16 second leg against Benfica.
  • Youngest scorer in a semi-final: in the 3-3 draw with Inter Milan in 2025.

The 2025-26 season pushed him into a different bracket altogether. In December 2025, an assist against Eintracht Frankfurt took him to 14 contributions before his 19th birthday, passing Mbappé’s mark of 13. In April 2026, he scored inside four minutes in the second leg at Atlético Madrid. Barcelona won that match 2-1 but went out of the competition overall. The goal still made him the youngest player to reach 20 goal contributions (at 18 years and 275 days) and the youngest to reach 10 in a single campaign. Haaland had held that record with 11 contributions at 19 years and 212 days.

He finished that campaign with six goals and four assists in ten Champions League appearances.

A fast start to the 2026/27 campaign

The new season has only added to the pile. In Barcelona’s 5-1 opening win over Feyenoord, Yamal scored a free kick and set up goals for Raphinha and Gabriel Jesus. That night took him to 23 goal contributions, and Opta confirmed he had moved past Mbappé’s record of 20 for a teenager.

He also led Barcelona out that night. At 19 years and 58 days, he became the club’s youngest-ever captain, taking the armband after Raphinha and Pedri had been substituted. The previous record belonged to Bojan Krkić, who was 20 years and 56 days old. In Istanbul, he picked up the armband again when Pedri was replaced.

The tournament has not been quiet off the ball, either. After the win, Yamal teased Galatasaray midfielder Mario Lemina on social media, and Eric García said afterwards that some opponents give Yamal extra motivation without meaning to.

Barcelona coach Hansi Flick has been consistent about Yamal for a long time. Back in 2025, he called him “The best 17-year-old I’ve seen.” Two seasons on, the numbers have only made that line easier to defend.

Fermín López, who scored from Yamal’s first assist on Tuesday, described him as a friend and a great teammate, and said everybody is watching the winger, which he called only natural.

What comes next for Yamal in the Champions League

The next chance to extend the record comes on October 20, when Barcelona travel to face Paris. Aston Villa visit Barcelona on November 3, and Manchester City arrive on December 8. Yamal turns 20 in July 2027, so every teenage record he holds can still grow until then. The one that looks closest is Mbappé’s record for Champions League goals by a teenager, which he came near to on Tuesday.

Barcelona are La Liga champions for the second year running, having secured their 29th title in May 2026. A Champions League run to match would give Yamal’s personal numbers a trophy to go with them.
