January 1, 2022, is about to be funfilled as Doyenne Circle brings Speaking Out on stage.
Speaking Out is a stage play that will see the queen of Nigerian music herself, Onyeka Onwenu sing, dance, and act alongside Kate Henshaw, Patience Ozokwor, and other remarkable Nollywood veterans.
Chukwuma Okoye, the writer of this creative work employed a plethora of the female experience to tell a story driven by a musical force.
Speaking Out is a compilation of the original works from Tony Marinho, directed by Kenneth Uphopho, a creative Choreographer, Dancer, Actor, Arts Manager, Director, and Acting coach.
The play will make use of dance, poetry, design, popular and traditional music, and song to draw its audience into a world of creativity, perfectly delivered by the best creative minds out there.
Speaking Out begins with a celebration of the girl child’s birth and takes the audience on a roller-coaster ride through her difficult growth in a predominantly gender-discriminatory atmosphere.
From the celebration of her birth to such common obstacles as child labor, education, female trafficking, dating, sex, spousal abuse, divorce, and single motherhood, she is plagued by an inequitable society. Despite all obstacles, she emerges with her daughter, stronger with dignity and pride, determined to live her life to the fullest.
Okoye is ecstatic about the cast selection and the energy they will offer to the performance through a combination of acting, singing, and dancing. She is particular about what each cast member will contribute to the production’s success.
The play which is slated to hold at Agip Hall, Muson Center, Lagos, from January 1 to 3, 2022, is already attracting much-deserved interest within the theatrical business, with crowds of girls filling out the casting call for auditions.
Why Speaking Out is a great idea
In a society where victim-blaming is rampant, making it hard for speaking out when abused, this is yet another way of using art to raise awareness for every victim out there, letting them all know that it is okay to speak out.
The more we all use our platforms to send these messages out there, the better for everyone. We get a society that understands keeping quiet is no more an option.
