Nigeria’s Oscar submission ‘The Milkmaid’ lands Amazon Prime Video debut

Amazon Prime Video now offers streaming of “The Milkmaid,” Nigeria’s official entry for the 93rd Academy Awards. On August 6, 2022, a year after winning numerous honors, the historic movie had its exclusive streaming debut on the platform.

The critically praised film, directed by Desmond Ovbiagele, stars Anthonieta Kalunta, Maryam Booth, and Gambo Usman Kona. It is an imaginative depiction of the fate of two rural Northern Nigerian peasant sisters who become embroiled in the turmoil of a militant insurgency. The iconic representation of the two Fulani milkmaids on the Ten Naira note served as the inspiration for the song “The Milkmaid.”

Acclaimed cinematographer Yinka Edward photographed the movie in Taraba state, while Seun Sowemimo served as executive producer.
