I came into the music industry from UK prison, thought I’d be dead – Burna Boy opens up

Afrofusion singer Damini Ogulu, popularly known as Burna Boy, has revealed that he came into the music industry straight out of Chelmsford HMP, a UK jail for young offenders.

The 31-year-old disclosed this in a Twitter post while reminiscing on his past.

The singer said he does not care about being “named Nigeria’s biggest music star” as much as people think but “Nigeria really doesn’t know me”.

Burnaboy also admitted that he had not idea that he would live this long. The Grammy winner tweeted:

“I came into the music industry straight from Chelmsford HMP. I had no idea I would even live this long.

“So when people talk about me now, it’s all just funny. Of course, I would perform with my injured leg, or even no legs or arms.

“Nigeria really doesn’t know me. I don’t care to be the biggest Nigerian artist. I’m just happy I can do what I love and take care of my people from it.

“If you knew just half of the shit I used to do for money, risking my freedom daily, you would be way happier for me.”

This is the first time Burna Boy personally admitted to going to prison in the UK.

Still on Burna Boy, as a man of many firsts, 2022, is obviously a great year as he keeps breaking different records.

The singer recently boasted about performing in almost every country in the world.

The Grammy winner bragged in a recent Twitter post.

He wrote:

“And by 2022 I’ve performed in almost every country in the world. Once I do The Asia, Australia and southAmerican tour. I will truly have done it all.”

On July 31, Burna Boy became the first African artiste to sell out the State Farm Arena, beating his colleagues Wizkid, Davido and Tiwa Savage.

The singer sold out the 21,000-capacity State Farm Arena in Atlanta.

Burna Boy is also the only African artiste who has sold out four Arenas in the US. They include; the 17 thousand-capacity Hollywood bowl, the Toyota center, with a capacity of 19 thousand, the 21 thousand Madison Square Garden, and the 21 thousand-capacity State Farm Arena in Atlanta.

The 30-year-old also made history as the first African to sell out the Ziggi Dome in Amsterdam, Netherlands during his concert Burna Boy Space Drift tour.
