Nigerian actress and producer Funke Akindele recently shared her experience of losing movie roles because of her physique.
According to her she was tagged as “ugly” by certain individuals who told her she wouldn’t be considered for movie roles.
Despite her undeniable talent and dedication to her craft, Funke Akindele revealed that she faced harsh reality of being judged solely on her appearance.
In the most recent episode of the TokeMoments podcast, hosted by Toke Makinwa, Funke Akindele claimed that her physical appearance caused her to be passed over for important roles, even in Yoruba indigenous films.
She described how actress Iyabo Ojo, frequently stepped in to support her during her arguments with directors who rejected her because of her appearance.
Producers, according to Funke, were only giving her small roles, because they felt she didn’t fit into the kind of roles they want.
“I remember people telling me, ‘You are not fine. You don’t have ass. You don’t have boobs. You will not be in this film,” she recalled.
“And, I remember crying. A lot of times I would cry, break down, get into the bathroom and cry” She said.
