Yeni Kuti, the outspoken media personality and daughter of the legendary Afrobeat pioneer Fela Kuti, has taken a bold stance against actress Ngozi Ezeonu over her recent comments on “inappropriate dressing” at auditions.

Ezeonu, widely regarded as a veteran in the Nigerian film industry, sparked controversy after a video surfaced online showing her admonishing two young actresses for attending an audition without wearing bras.

The revered actress had advised aspiring actresses to embrace modest dressing, particularly during auditions, and questioned the professionalism of showing up without adhering to what she considers acceptable standards.

While some supported Ezeonu’s remarks as a call for decorum and discipline in the industry, Yeni Kuti vehemently disagreed in viral clip.

Speaking on the latest episode of the talk show Your View, Kuti criticized Ezeonu’s approach, described it as unnecessary and harsh.

The 63-year-old went a step further, suggesting that instead of publicly criticizing young actresses who don’t meet her dress code standards, Ezeonu should simply dismiss them from auditions without making a spectacle of their appearance.

Her words;

“I think it was not really any of her business. All she had to do was reject them, saying, ‘I do not want people who dress like you.’ I do not want to be a hypocrite because I wore tight jeans and a small top when I was that age,” she said.

“… I think as old people, we forget what we did. So when we criticize young people, we have forgotten what we did at a younger age. At 24, I had flat tummy. But if you wear it now and people see me, they would say, ‘Aunty, what’s wrong that you are showing this your belle?’ Because it is her set, she can say she does not want them on her set. The country is hot, and these ones do not want to sweat.

“All I am saying is when we grow, we should look back at what we wore before we judge. I do not know what you look like at that age. Show me your picture of that age.”
