Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu rolled out a warm welcome for African football legend and former Chelsea FC star Didier Drogba at the Lagos House, Marina, on Monday.

As part of an engagement between Team Drogba, the E1 Racing Team, and the Lagos State Government, the football icon sat down with Sanwo-Olu, a die-hard Arsenal supporter, for a conversation that inevitably veered toward the beautiful game.

With a mischievous grin, the governor wasted no time teasing Drogba about never donning the famous red and white of Arsenal, a club he holds close to his heart.

Drogba, known for his charisma both on and off the pitch, didn’t shy away from the moment. He admitted that growing up, Arsenal was his first love, club that shaped his early admiration for football.

But, as fate would have it, Drogba said his career took him elsewhere, and once Chelsea came calling, there was no looking back, and the blue of Stamford Bridge became his identity.

The Ivorian then let the governor in on a fascinating behind-the-scenes story, one involving none other than Thierry Henry, Arsenal’s legendary talisman and a pillar of the iconic Invincibles squad.

According to him, when he first arrived in London as a fresh Chelsea recruit, Henry didn’t hesitate to lay down the law, told him in no uncertain terms that Arsenal ran things in London, that the city belonged to the Gunners, and that he was stepping into enemy territory.

At the time, Drogba said he humbly took Henry’s words in stride, but deep down, he knew he had a point to prove. And that’s exactly what he did. The football star poked that he and his Chelsea teammates didn’t just compete with Arsenal, they took over London, rewrote the city’s football narrative.
