Afrobeats titans collide: Inside Davido and Burna Boy’s bitter rivalry

In the vibrant world of Afrobeats, few rivalries have captivated audiences like that between Davido and Burna Boy. Both artists have achieved monumental success, yet their paths have been marked by tension, subtle jabs, and public confrontations.

This article delves into the origins, key moments, and underlying factors of their ongoing feud.

Origins: From Admiration to Animosity

The relationship between Davido and Burna Boy wasn’t always strained. Adebayo Adeleke, known as B-Red and Davido’s cousin, recalled that during their early days, Burna Boy was enthusiastic about meeting Davido, even chasing after his car to express admiration .

However, tensions began to surface around 2019 when Burna Boy received a Grammy nomination for his album “African Giant.” Following his loss to Angelique Kidjo, Burna Boy became more vocal about his journey, emphasizing that no one paved the way for him and subtly criticizing peers who, in his view, had advantages he lacked .

Subtle Jabs and Social Media Spats

The rivalry intensified in 2020 when Davido shared an edited image of himself and Wizkid, captioned “The 2 greatest of all time! No cap.” Burna Boy responded with a cryptic message: “You cannot play football, everybody knows you cannot play football and you are an embarrassment to the team. But your daddy bought the football team,” a statement widely interpreted as a dig at Davido’s affluent background .

Their musical releases also reflected the tension. Burna Boy’s “Way Too Big” contained lyrics perceived as dismissive of rivals, while Davido’s “FEM” included lines that many believed targeted Burna Boy .

Physical Altercation in Ghana

The feud reached a boiling point in December 2020 at the Level Up Rooftop Lounge in Accra, Ghana. An eyewitness reported that Burna Boy entered the venue with a group and confronted Davido, leading to a physical altercation. Security personnel intervened, escorting Burna Boy and his entourage out of the premises .

Attempts at Reconciliation

Despite the public spats, there have been moments suggesting a thaw in their relationship. On New Year’s Eve 2021, Burna Boy took to Instagram to declare that he had no issues with Davido, stating, “We good now.” He emphasized the need for unity in the industry, urging artists to love themselves .

Resurgence of Rivalry

However, the peace was short-lived. In February 2024, after both artists faced disappointments at the Grammy Awards, a Davido fan mocked Burna Boy for not winning any of his four nominations. Burna Boy responded by ridiculing the fan’s display picture, which featured Davido, reigniting the rivalry and sparking debates among fans online .

Underlying Factors: Ego, Recognition, and Legacy

At the heart of their feud lies a struggle for recognition and legacy. Burna Boy has often portrayed himself as a self-made artist who achieved success without industry support, contrasting this with Davido’s narrative of coming from a wealthy background. This dichotomy fuels their rivalry, as both artists vie for the title of Afrobeats’ leading figure.

A Rivalry Reflecting the Industry’s Evolution

The Davido-Burna Boy saga is more than just a personal feud; it mirrors the broader dynamics of the Nigerian music industry, where issues of authenticity, privilege, and recognition are constantly at play. As both artists continue to shape the global soundscape of Afrobeats, their interactions—whether collaborative or confrontational—will undoubtedly influence the genre’s trajectory.
