Men are raised to suffer in silence – AY Comedian defends 2Baba’s apology amid criticism

AY Comedian | 2Baba

Popular comedian and filmmaker Ayo Makun, known to many as AY, has weighed in on the viral controversy surrounding 2Baba’s public apology, offering a rare male perspective on vulnerability, masculinity, and public pressure.

The music icon, Innocent Idibia, better known as 2Baba, made headlines recently after his now-viral comment on Nedu’s new 234Mzansi podcast, where he claimed that “men are not wired to be sexually committed to one woman.”

The statement triggered an intense online backlash, with many accusing him of justifying infidelity and undermining the values of loyalty, especially considering his recent marriage to Natasha Osawaru.

In a surprising twist, 2Baba later released an emotional video on Instagram, apologizing to his wife Natasha, his children, and his fans. He admitted he had “fucked up” and wasn’t proud of his earlier comments, describing Natasha as “the love of his life” and asking for forgiveness.

But while many continued to criticize the singer, AY has come out in full defense of him, using the moment to highlight a deeper issue. He diversified the emotional suppression men are taught to live with.

Taking to Instagram, AY shared a heartfelt message that turned the conversation from gossip to introspection. He described 2Baba as “a man under duress, taking accountability not because he is perfect, but because he is human.”

AY wrote:

“It’s always easy to cast the first stone at the supposed offender. No one pauses to ask him the most human question, ‘Are you okay?’ And when they do, it’s rarely without an agenda. No one really cares.”

He went on to call out society’s deep-rooted culture of emotional repression among men:

“As men, we’re raised to suffer in silence. Whether we’re right or wrong, we’re told to ‘man up.’ Even when we finally speak, it rarely ends well. We’re blamed. Misunderstood. Dismissed.”

“Our vulnerability doesn’t protect us. It exposes us. Na who dem catch na him be thief.”

“The things that truly matter in society often go unnoticed. I believe the government should start awarding entertainers with special bonuses for consistently helping to shift Nigerians’ focus away from issues that don’t contribute to their growth. Make una continue to pay attention to people wey don personally hustle to settle themselves. Dey play!.”
