Why I dropped my surname for ‘Osakioduwa’ – IK

IK Osakioduwa

Veteran media personality IK Osakioduwa is known for his smooth voice, charisma, and unforgettable presence on TV and radio. However, behind the fame is a story of personal transformation that started with something as simple as a surname.

In a candid conversation with actress Nancy Isime on her show, IK opened up about the pivotal moment that made him change his last name from Obiara to Osakioduwa.

According to him, that decision marked the beginning of his true identity and spiritual breakthrough. He said:

“My dad was in the army. We went to the military hospital in Ikeja, and I had to state who I was — whose child I was. That moment hit me.”

He recalled how something as routine as checking in at the hospital stirred a powerful internal shift. He continued:

“I’m almost a full-on adult and I’m still saying I’m so-and-so’s son? That moment made me realise I needed to wake up and start building my own identity.”

The encounter led IK to embark on a personal spiritual and cultural journey. Inspired by the biblical story of Jacob, who became Israel after wrestling with God, IK began researching the meaning and roots of his former surname, Obiara. What he discovered shocked him. IK disclosed:

“I found out my surname was embedded in some deity somewhere. I’m like, what does that mean? No, I’m a Christian. I wanted something that aligned with my faith.”

That quest for alignment led him to Osakioduwa — a name he said felt like divine confirmation. He continued:

“‘Osa’ is God. ‘Ioduwa’ means ‘God opens the door to wealth’. Like… now that’s a name.”

Convincing his father to approve the name change was no easy feat. According to IK, it took four years of praying and pleading, with quiet backing from his mother, before his dad finally agreed.

But once he officially became IK Osakioduwa, things began to change. He said:

“That name literally changed my life,”
“My door to wealth opened spiritually and professionally. Everything aligned.”

Since the name change, IK’s career has flourished. From hosting Big Brother Africa, The Voice Nigeria, and other major live events, to becoming one of Nigeria’s most respected media icons.

Now, IK says that what started as a spiritual journey also became a personal rebranding. One that helped him step out from under his father’s shadow and carve his own name into greatness.
