The Coroner’s Court sitting in Ikorodu has recommended the criminal prosecution of auxiliary nurse Feyisayo Ogedengbe over the death of late singer, Mohbad.
Magistrate Adedayo Shotobi, who led the inquest, ruled on Friday that the nurse acted with gross negligence by administering an injection without a doctor’s prescription. A move she described as “unlawful and professionally reckless.”
While the court found no evidence of homicide, it stressed that the unlicensed treatment directly contributed to the singer’s sudden death.
Asides the Nurse, the court also criticized Mohbad’s father for hastily burying his son without proper documentation, saying it obstructed investigations. The coroner questioned his motives and noted that cultural reasons shouldn’t override legal procedures, especially in a suspicious death involving a young, healthy adult.
Mohbad’s partner, Omowunmi, was also faulted for failing to act decisively during the singer’s medical emergency and remaining silent until after public pressure mounted. Though her emotional state was acknowledged, the court said she bore “moral responsibility” for not insisting on a proper autopsy or investigation before the burial.
Additionally, the court ordered a probe into the Nigeria Police Force’s inaction regarding a petition filed by Mohbad before his death and urged the Human Rights Commission to look into reports of harassment and intimidation.
Legal counsels from both Mohbad’s family and his wife’s team agreed with the recommendations, with the next step being the implementation and possible prosecutions.
Mohbad, aged 26, died on September 12, 2023, under controversial circumstances after being treated by the nurse at home. His body was exhumed nine days later for an autopsy, on the orders of the Lagos State Government.
The findings in that autopsy concluded on April 29, 2024 showed no definitive cause of death could be determined due to decomposition.
The second autopsy was ordered by the Coroner in June 2024, after the deceased’s family made an application for an independent review.
