From prayers to accusation: Kemi Olunloyo, Jumoke Odetola, Daddy Freeze share thoughts on Buhari’s death

Buhari's death: Kemi Olunloyo, Daddy Freeze, Jumoke Otedola

The reported death of Nigeria’s former President Muhammadu Buhari has triggered a cascade of public reactions — from prayers and reflections to fiery condemnations.

Notable personalities like journalist Kemi Olunloyo, actress Jumoke Odetola, and broadcaster Daddy Freeze have shared strikingly different perspectives on the late former leader’s life and legacy.

Moments after the news began trending, Kemi Olunloyo posted a blistering critique of Buhari’s political past. In her unfiltered message, she accused the former military ruler of repressing journalists during his military regime and described him as a “pathological violator of press freedom.”

She went further to assert that Buhari’s real age was 89, not 82, referenced his takeover of government in 1983 when her father was still in public office. In her words, his death marked a long-overdue reckoning for alleged injustices under his leadership.

She wrote:

“Finally, Buhari and My Dad will meet in Hell. I hope everyone he locked up is released and all the journalists he executed during his military reign continue to rest in peace. I hope his family can now tell the world he was 89 and not 82 because he was 48 yrs with my dad in 1983 when he took over Shagari’s democracy.”

In contrast, Nollywood actress Jumoke Odetola took a more reflective and humane route in her tribute. Without delving into politics, she shared a message urging Nigerians to think deeply about the brevity of life and the legacy each person leaves behind.

“All of us someday, one day — THE REALITY. May we fulfill our part and leave a good legacy behind,” she wrote, striking a tone that resonated widely across social media.

On his part, media personality Daddy Freeze reacted with a somber message that emphasized life’s unpredictability.

In a short clip, Freeze appeared visibly contemplative as he noted how, despite his influence and access, Buhari reportedly spent his final days battling illness far from the country he once ruled, concluded with a prayer for the repose of his soul.

As the nation reflects on the death of one of its most polarizing leaders, the emotional spectrum expressed by these public figures offers a glimpse into the complexity of Buhari’s legacy — shaped by his controversial past, political power, and the impact he left on those who lived through his rule.
