Marriage is a stupid step – Chike sparks debate with bold views

Nigerian singer and songwriter Chike-Ezekpeazu Osebuka, popularly known as Chike, has stirred conversation online after declaring that he has no plans to get married, describing the institution as “a stupid step.”

The 32-year-old music star made the comment during a candid sit-down with media personality Chude Jideonwo, where he opened up about his personal views on relationships, happiness, and his journey in the entertainment industry.

“In my personal opinion, in fact, I think it’s a stupid step to get married, that’s my opinion,” Chike said, stressing that marriage is not a priority for him at this stage of life.

The singer, who is best known for his soulful love songs, added that his sense of fulfillment is tied more to financial security than to traditional milestones like marriage. He admitted:

Reflecting on his career during the interview, Chike recalled that he only decided to pursue music professionally after completing his university education. He said:

“I would say right after my university, I knew music is what I’ll do for a living. I won’t say I knew before, to be honest, because I just used to sing and disturb everybody around me.”

Chike’s remarks have surprised many fans who often see him as one of Nigeria’s most romantic singers, with hits like ‘Boo of the Booless’ and ‘Running (To You)’. Yet, this is not the first time he has given unusual takes on love and relationships.

Back in 2022, the singer revealed that he has never actually said the words “I love you” to anyone. He explained that the phrase makes him feel extremely vulnerable.

“I get that feeling that if I say it, my bolz would shrink and disappear,” he joked at the time, adding that he is grateful he can instead express such emotions through his music.

Chike’s official entry into the music scene began in 2015 when he participated in Project Fame. He later gained national attention as the first runner-up on The Voice of Nigeria in 2016, where his vocal prowess won him a loyal fanbase. That same year, he released his debut single ‘Fancy’.

Since then, the singer has built a reputation for delivering heartfelt, love-themed songs that resonate with audiences across Africa. Beyond music, Chike has also explored acting, featuring in notable productions such as ‘Gangs of Lagos’ and ‘Battleground’.
