Popular Nollywood actress Tonto Dikeh, fondly known to fans as Tontolet, has taken an hilarious trip down memory lane regarding her short-lived music career.
In a new Instagram post, the actress cum politician shared a short clip of herself singing the classic gospel tune “God is good all the time…”.
Tonto accompanied the video with a caption that had fans in stitches. The mother of one wrote:
“If I could sing ehn, una for don Dey sick of me…
Like you don’t even understand, Likkeeeeeeeeeeee who is Tiwa? Who is Whitney, who is cece winas? Taaaaahhhhhhh😂😂😂😂.”
But she didn’t stop there. In the same breath of humour and self-reflection, Tonto revealed that her past attempt at music wasn’t entirely her idea.
She added:
“Watching this video reminds me of the time I had the worst kind of friends who pushed me to release album…
Look sneeze/sniper and co your bedroom is been reserved in hell..😂😂😂😂😂😂😂🥰🥰🥰😂😂😂😂😂😂🥰😂😩😩.
Moral of this lesson choose your friends wisely more importantly be wise😂💃🤗.”
WITHIN NIGERIA recalls that back in 2012, when many Nollywood stars were dabbling in music, Tonto decided to give it a shot too. She released two singles, “Hi” and “Itz Ova” (featuring Snypa), and it was met with mixed reactions from fans.
The songs which were a mix of techno-pop and heartbreak went viral almost instantly. Not necessarily because they were chart-toppers, but because they sparked endless debate. Fans were divided over the songs so much so that while some hyped her confidence, others weren’t exactly gentle with their feedback.
Still, Tonto was unbothered. By 2013, she dropped more singles like “Jeje”, “Sheba” (featuring Solid Star), and “Ekebe.” Then, in 2014, she made a major move by signing with D’banj’s DB Records.
Under DB Records, Tonto aka “Poko Lee” released “Sugar Rush” featuring D’banj himself, and even hinted that an explosive album was on the way. There were interviews, photo shoots, and all the teasers of a rising pop star in the making, but the album never came.
By 2016, her deal with DB Records reportedly quietly ended, and Tonto gradually stepped away from the mic.
