President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Ayuba Wabba has stated that the ongoing review of the constitution is the only way agitations across the country can be addressed.

This was stated on Wednesday by the NLC President at the south-west constitution review public hearing in Lagos.

There have been agitations for restructuring, and in some cases, secession, in parts of the country.

Speaking on the development, the NLC president expressed optimism that the federal lawmakers will act on the concerns raised at the public hearing, noting that the review is “timely”, and will steer the country towards a better future.

“There has been a lot of agitations and a lot of issues in our polity. Therefore, I can say that the public hearing is timely and people can use it to actually advance a lot of issues and can also ventilate their ideas,” he said.

“Those ideals should be accommodated. Importantly,  I think it is about issues that are pertinent at this point in time. The issue of devolution of power, we support that because power is so concentrated in the centre, but in doing that, we must recognise the best global practices, because there is no federal system that is the same with the other.

“If you look at the mood of the nation now and the agitations across the country,  this is the only avenue those agitations can be addressed, and we don’t want it to get out of hand, so they must be reasonable.

“So, my expectation and hope is that they should be able to act decisively so that the expectations of Nigerians will not be cut off.”
