Sunshine Stars’ Head Coach, Gbenga Ogunbote, on Thursday in Akure resigned from his position at the Nigeria Professional Football League club side.

Ogunbote, who tendered his resignation on Thursday, disclosed that his decision was based on the poor performance of the team.

Ogunbote’s resignation came after 16 matches without a win in the 2020/2021 NPFL season.

In the resignation letter addressed to the Interim Committee Chairman of the Ondo State Football Association, the coach also said the welfare package for the team’s players was poor.

According to him, the lack of welfare and support had affected the morales of the players and collective motivations of the team players.

“I took the job in the anticipation that we will continue where we stopped the last time I coached the team, with all hands pulling together to support the team having better results.

“However, on this occasion of my relationship with the team, the welfare of the team is way off the mark such that it affects the morale of the players and the collective motivation of the team.

“Players are my tools, with my input to get results. Results are what makes a difference in being a successful coach, which unfortunately is not happening this time.

“I thank the management and officials for every support which I will never forget, reflecting on my time with Sunshine Stars FC.

“I hereby appreciate all and tender my resignation with this month salary forfeited in lieu of my notice, while I expect all my outstanding salaries, sign-on fees and bonuses to be paid in due course for proper disengagement.

“I wish the team all the best in the future prosecution of the league,” Ogunbote stated in his resignation letter.

Meanwhile, Ogunbote appealed to the interim committee of the club to pay all his outstanding salaries, sign-on fees as well as bonuses.

In the past weeks, the club had been battling relegation as currently standing at 18th position on the league table with 21 points.
