Barcelona president, Joan Laporta, has said the only way to keep Lionel Messi, would have been to accept the deal proposed by LaLiga this week.

The agreement would have seen 10% of the league’s business sold to the investment fund, CVC Capital Partners.

“It would not be in Barca’s best interests. We were going to receive some money but we think that accepting it is not something we can do [to keep Messi].

“It’s too risky. The club is above players, coaches and presidents,” Laporta told a press conference on Friday.

Laporta however insisted that negotiations to keep Messi at the Nou Camp are over.

He also made it clear he does not want to generate “false hope” that the situation could be fixed.

On Thursday, Barca announced that Messi will not re-sign with the club, because of their financial problems.

Laporta blamed the “disastrous” situation on the previous board and LaLiga’s rigid spending limits.
