Lagos State House of Assembly is proposing a bill for a law to establish a university of education.

This was made known during a Public Hearing at the Assembly Complex titled, ‘A Bill for a Law to Provide for the Establishment of the University of Education, Lagos (UNEDLAG) and for Connected Purposes.’ The proposed bill is a replacement for the extant Lagos State College of Education Law and the Lagos State College of Primary Education Law, which were established for the training of teachers.

Welcoming stakeholders to the hearing on the bill, the host and Chairman, House Committee on Education (Tertiary Institution), Mr. Ajani Owolabi, said the government is seeking to position the education sector to compete with global standards by re-inventing the two existing colleges of education in the state; merging and transforming them into a university of education.

Owolabi highlighted the objectives of the bill to include the provision of courses of instruction, training and other related studies as may be prescribed towards the award of degrees, non-degrees, diplomas and certificates; special training courses in education or related subjects, promote research and other means of knowledge practicable to resolving educational, socio-cultural, economic, environmental, scientific, technological and ecological problems.
